Google Docs vs. Zoho?Who comes out on Top?

ReadWriteWeb has put together a quick comparison of five different online office suites to see how they stack up to each other, and so I thought that I would give my take on Zoho vs. Google Docs & Spreadsheets. Google and Zoho have both been leaders in the online office suite arena, and each are great for different reasons.

First I?ll start with Zoho, which has a collection of services that is unmatched by any other online office suite. They?ve got everything from project managing, a presentation creator, spreadsheet capabilities, and word processing. Heck, that?s just a small list of what they offer. They tie everything together beautifully by letting you, for example, add a Zoho Sheet into your Zoho Notebook. When Zoho launches their mail client it will integrate almost everything which you can see in this interactive demo.

Zoho also offers a ton of features and configuration options that other online suites don?t have. An example of this can be seen in the Zoho Writer options where they let you choose which buttons are shown on the toolbar:

So why would anyone want to use Google Docs? The name of course! Google Docs and Spreadsheets only has a fraction of the features that Zoho?s offerings have, but Google already has a large fan base because of their search engine. Google Docs users love the simple interface and the intuitive design that makes it so easy to use. Zoho gives you the feeling that you?re using Microsoft Office 2003, while Google didn?t try to take that route. Google Docs is more unique, and someone unfamiliar with Microsoft Office could probably pick up on using it faster than using Zoho.

The thing that Google is missing the most is strong integration between their products. Gmail should be the central hub for users to create documents, manage their notebook, read feeds, and do just about anything. It should take just a few clicks from within my Inbox to send off a document to someone in a format that I can choose (PDF, DOC, etc?.).

To be honest Google greatly disappoints me when it comes to integration because they have some really great products and services available. I feel like a broken record talking about this, but Google announced last October that they were not going to be releasing new services for awhile because they wanted to start integrating their things together, yet we haven?t seen much indication of this going on. Just the fact that Gmail isn?t integrated with Picasa Web Albums still astonishes me.

So the winner between the two services (in my opinion) is Zoho, which is also what Donation Coder thought when they compared a few of the online word processors. If Google can begin integrating some of their services together with Gmail I would undoubtedly use them over anything else.

Fostering animals is an adventure ? as anyone who has ever fostered will tell you! Once I realized that every foster animal would lead me toward having more human friends, I was able to let the animals go. Whenever someone says replica watches, ?Oh, I could never foster!? If you are really lucky (and really persistent) those families will stay in touch with you and will continue to send you updates, pictures and happy stories for the rest of that animal?s life. Over the years I?ve collected some great images ? a couple of my favorites show a former foster dog in her mom?s wedding; one of my kittens welcoming a new baby home as a grown up cat; and a dog who went home with his 6-year-old little girl at her graduation ceremony, sporting a grey muzzle.

All of my foster animals are special. Over the past winter, we cared for a beautiful puppy named Lucy (her nickname was ?Sugar Foot?). Lucy came in with a variety of injuries and wounds, and had to have a leg amputated. My family, friends and colleagues helped to wrap her wounds in bandages for several weeks and once she had recovered she began to live life with abandon ? hiding squeaky balls around the house, running up the hill with the big dogs at the dog park and chasing our cats up and down the stairs.

Lucy was adopted by a wonderful family who learned about her (ironically, given her nickname!) at our Sugar & Champagne Affair. So although our house is now a bit quieter, we are thrilled to know that she is happy and loved by her new humans and by her new brother, Rocket.

As the cycle of fostering goes, with Lucy?s departure we had room for another animal in need. WHS Vet Tech Rachel Horne made a persuasive case that I should bring home a sweet little cat who had been found covered in cooking grease at a D.C. fish fry restaurant. Many dish detergent baths later he was missing clumps of hair ? but he smelled great, and his spirit was intact. That night the cat who is now Brewster made the ride home from work with me.

After a few weeks in our house, he has also come into his own. For the first three days he hid, with an amazing ability to camouflage himself. Often, he was in plain sight. Bookshelves and laundry piles became a favorite, but he also located a little pouch in one of our reclining chairs that he made his home. We put a little sticky note on the chair to remind people not to recline before checking his ?spot.?

Now, Brewster has started to show his true, tabby colors ? as all of the animals do when they leave the adoption center. Despite the loving care and attention of our staff, the shelters are noisy, stressful and sometimes chaotic places ? there are unusual noises and smells, and lights are often on somewhere. In my experience, each foster animal truly exhales after they leave the shelter environment, and that is when you get to see who they really are.

Brewster, who was sweet and cuddly at the shelter, is now confident and feisty; he faces down our dog, and all dogs who come to the house. He often gets the ?ya yas,? racing unprompted from room to room and zipping around. He even chases our very strong-willed cat Mr. Pibb out of bed at night.

Herein lies the real benefit and importance of the WHS foster program. Not only do foster families provide a much needed safe haven for animals, but they also give each dog or cat the opportunity to feel comfortable enough to reveal his or her true personality. As a result, we learn valuable information that allows us to find a better permanent match than we might otherwise have done ? and for that, we can never thank our foster families enough.

Iraq Christian heritage sites lie neglected

A stone's throw from Iraq's Shiite holy city of Najaf's airport, the remains of the celebrated ancient Christian city of Hira lie neglected and mouldering, because funds for excavation have dried up.

Three sites, discovered five years ago, are unexplored and unkempt, and officials fear the uncompleted excavation could lead to their eventual demise.

The sites, which contain mud walls and jars that are exposed to the elements, lie fewer than 100 metres (yards) from an active runway, are not fenced off and have no security except their proximity to the restricted airport area.

They form part of the ancient Lakhmid capital of Hira, on the outskirts of Najaf, 150 kilometres (95 miles) south of Baghdad.

The Lakhmids were a pre-Islamic Arab tribe that is believed to have emigrated to what is now Iraq from Yemen in the second or third century. The founder of the dynasty was Amr, whose son, Imru al-Qais, converted to Christianity.

In 266, the Lakhmids turned the former military encampment of Hira into their capital.

Establishing their empire across what is now Iraq and northeastern Arabia, they held sway across the lands that lay between the Persians -- to whom they were vassals for several centuries -- and the Romans.

They were a major force among the pre-Islamic Arab peoples, with their culture and learning spread widely and where the early Arabic alphabet was standardised.

Arab poets described Hira as a paradise on earth, with one saying that, because of the city's pleasant climate and beauty, a day in Hira was "better than a year of treatment".

Hira, which extends around 17 kilometres (10 miles) south from Najaf, remained the Lakhmid capital until 663, when Muslim general Khalid bin al-Walid conquered it on the orders of Abu Baqr, the immediate successor of the Prophet Mohammed.

"The area has historical importance, because it is rich in antiquities, including especially the remains of churches, abbeys and palaces," said Shakir Abdulzahra Jabari, who led excavations there in 2007, 2009 and 2010.

"But now, the antiquities have been neglected for a year, and they do not receive any attention, despite the fact that many Western countries are interested in Hira's history as the main gateway of Christianity into Iraq."

Hira was famous for its arable land, and for its palaces and monasteries, notably the Aoun al-Abadi Palace, which hosted visiting dignitaries, and the Al-Lij monastery.

The sites feature the historic treasures of the Lakhmid era, such as the bases of massive abbeys that include dozens of rooms, from studying halls to monastic cells and storage areas.

"Christians have lived for a long period of time in the Hira region, where they formed around one-third of the city's population, with the Al-Abad tribe the most well-known of their community," said Yahya Kadhim al-Sultani, a professor at Kufa University in Najaf's twin city.

"Hira was characterised by a not insignificant number of churches built for living in, and the practise of various scientific and cultural activities," Sultani added.

The ancient city has seen several excavations in decades past, Jabari said.

Oxford University researchers explored the site in the 1930s, and Iraqi antiquities experts carried out their own excavations in 1938, 1956 and 1957.

It was during the latter set of explorations that the Palace of Al-Khawarnaq, built during the reign of fourth and fifth century King Numan I was discovered.

But since the 2003 US-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein, Baghdad's government has had bigger priorities than funding large-scale digs in a country with more than 12,000 documented archaeological sites.

Foreign exploration teams have largely avoided Iraq entirely over security fears, even though levels of violence in the country are significantly lower than their peak in 2006 and 2007.

And those who have come have largely chosen to focus on the autonomous and relatively safe Kurdistan region in the north for excavations.

"The excavation works resumed in the area in 2007. When expansion work was being done to Najaf airport, the first three sites were discovered," said Jabari.

"We have worked to save it from the (airport) expansion process."

Since then, several digs in an area of 3,000 square metres (32,300 square feet) have uncovered the bases of mud-built structures, as well as crosses etched into walls, and a piece of wax marble with the inscription, "Blessings from God, and God forgave the followers of Christ."

In 2009, the Najaf provincial department of antiquities said researchers had unearthed around 2,100 artifacts in different parts of the province, including coins, pieces of pottery and a number of buildings dating back to the Lakhmid dynasty.

"But exploration work stopped a year ago because of time limits on the project, which ran out of money, and no maintenance work has been done on the sites since," Jabari said.

He now fears that further neglect will lead to the antiquities' destruction.
