Small business marketing strategy and lessons from Fred Aldous ...

Notebooks at Fred Aldous

Note: This post has been Sponsored by O2, but all narrative and opinion is my own.

I love stories of businesses that are doing things that make them stand out. and then are delivering on them too.

You know the type. The sort of businesses that do cool things for their customers, are very local in their orientation but have a big reach and impact, that experiment and try new things, that create great experiences, that treat their people really well and get them involved (really involved) in the business and have been around for either a long time or are very early in their journey (innovation and age are not correlated, right?).

This post is the first of two that features videos of two businesses that fall into that category.

The first business is Fred Aldous, a family business that was started in 1886 and supplies ?materials to people who make things?. Check out the videos below:

The first is a profile of the business and a bit about their history:

The second features members of the Fred Aldous team and family talking about their business and the marketing that they are doing through the O2 Priority scheme (http://unr.ly/UJ8A05):

The things that I like about this business are both professional and personal:

  1. Just because the business has been around for 125 years doesn?t mean that it isn?t innovative and doesn?t move with the times. Check out Fred Aldous? site (http://unr.ly/Tg38EK) to learn more about their story and see how they are using social media and other new marketing techniques, like the O2 Priority scheme (http://unr.ly/UJ8A05).
  2. I really like the fact that they acknowledge the impact that their long-serving staff and their community of customers have had on their business (See their About Us page); and
  3. My Mum and Dad don?t live far from Manchester and my Dad is an avid painter so I?ll be recommending Fred Aldous to my Dad. In fact, having had a quick browse around their catalogue, I?m going to see if I can pick up a gift for him given that Christmas is fast approaching. :)

Finally, do check out The Guardian ?Loving Local? site (http://unr.ly/Tg45gp) for more stories of small, local businesses that are doing innovative things with their marketing.

Thanks to Dan Thompson for the image.

'Dancing' finalists dish on freestyles post show

By Michael Maloney, TODAY contributor

ABC

"Dancing" finalists Melissa Rycroft, Kelly Monaco and Shawn Johnson.

It?s been said that the "Dancing With the Stars" freestyle dance can be the deciding factor in determining the competition?s winner. (Remember last season?s showstopper by Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd to "I Play Chicken With the Train"?)

But the question remains: Will audiences respond positively to Kelly and Val?s "Dirty Dancing" routine to "Time of My Life"? Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani?s contemporary dance? Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough?s number that incorporated five of her fellow Olympic gymnast pals?

?Our dance was very appropriate,? Chmerkovskiy said backstage after the show. ?Kelly?s and my season has a lot of parallels with that movie. She was counted out, pre-season. I was somebody?s younger sibling.?Now, I finally have my own voice and spotlight. The song was perfect.?

None of the finalists went overboard with the expanded perimeters they were given for their freestyles. But Chmerkovskiy complemented his and Monaco?s performance by playing violin.

?I?m very grateful to my parents for forcing me to stick with it,? he said. ?It?s probably not the sexiest thing to whip out when you?re 17 and serenade a girl with, but at 26 ...?

?It pays off,? Monaco chimed in.

Of dancing with the Fierce Five, Johnson said, ?I trained with those girls for three years and to be on the stage with them meant everything.?

She also gives high marks to Hough for her performances and growth this season. ?He gave me everything back ? my confidence, my pride and my passion for finding something I love to do.?

Rycroft said that since the "All Stars" season has been about doing things that have never been done before (Knight Rider Bhangra, anyone?) she and Dovolani chose a contemporary theme for their freestyle.

?It was a risk,? Rycroft said. ?In season eight, we did something that was comfortable and easy. Competing against Shawn and Derek and Kelly and Val, well, we thought we needed to do something!?

Still, Dovolani was careful not to let the added extras overshadow his partner.

?I didn?t want to take any focus away from Melissa,? he said after the show. ?The trapeze artists (we used) were fantastic. But my goal was to celebrate Melissa?s journey.?

The "All-Stars" winner won?t be announced until Tuesday evening, but there?s already speculation about next season?s stars, including one of Johnson?s fellow Olympic gymnasts.

?Tony?s already working on it,? joked Rycroft. ?He was sizing them up saying, ?Oh, you?re the right height!? ?

US Scientific R&D Could Face Fiscal Cliff Doom

The tough economic times have had a huge effect on scientific research and development funding. The looming "fiscal cliff" may be the last straw for many programs. "The American science programs that landed the first man on the moon, found cures for deadly diseases and bred crops that feed the world now face the possibility of becoming relics in the story of human progress.

American scientific research and development stands to lose thousands of jobs and face a starvation diet of reduced funding if politicians fail to compromise and halt the United States' march towards the fiscal cliff's sequestration of federal funds."

Alarming 15-fold increase in inflatable bouncer-related injuries among children

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? A new study by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital examined pediatric injuries associated with inflatable bouncers, such as bounce houses and moonwalks. Researchers found that from 1995 to 2010 there was a 15-fold increase in the number of inflatable bouncer-related injuries that were treated in U.S. emergency departments among children younger than 18 years of age. In 2010 alone, more than 30 children per day, or about one child every 45 minutes, were treated in hospital emergency departments for injuries associated with inflatable bouncers.

The study, available online November 26, 2012 and published in the December 2012 print issue of Pediatrics, found that while fractures (28 percent) and strains or sprains (27 percent) were the most common types of injuries, approximately 1 in 5 injuries (19 percent) were to the head and neck, demonstrating that use of these products can pose serious risks. Falls (43 percent) were the most common cause of injury followed by stunts and collisions. The majority of the injuries occurred either in a recreational setting (44 percent) or at home (38 percent).

"The findings from this study show that there has been an alarming increase in the number of injuries from inflatable bouncers," said Gary A. Smith, MD, DrPH director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital. "It is time for us to take action to prevent these injuries. Ensuring that parents are aware of the potential risks, improving surveillance of the injuries, developing national safety guidelines and improving bouncer design are the first steps."

The study authors point out that the injury patterns for inflatable bouncers and trampolines are very similar, and although there are national safety guidelines for trampoline use, no such guidelines exist for inflatable bouncers.

"The medical and public health community has yet to provide recommendations on the safe use of inflatable bouncers," said Dr. Smith, also a professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. "The growing epidemic of inflatable bouncer injuries make it clear that it is time to do so."

Until national safety guidelines are in place, parents should consider the risks before allowing their child to use an inflatable bouncer. If parents allow their child to use an inflatable bouncer, they should consider limiting use to children 6 years of age and older, requiring that an adult be present to supervise while the bouncer is in use and allowing only one child on the bouncer at a time. If more than one child will be on the bouncer at the same time, the children should be approximately of the same age and size.

This is the first study to use a nationally representative sample to examine injuries associated with inflatable bouncer-related injuries that were treated in U.S. emergency departments. Data for this study were obtained from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), which is operated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The NEISS provides information on consumer product-related and sports and recreation-related injuries treated in hospital emergency departments across the country.

ConocoPhillips to sell Kazakh oilfield stake to India's ONGC for $5 billion

(Reuters) - ConocoPhillips said it plans to sell its 8.4 percent stake in Kazakhstan's giant Kashagan oil field to India's Oil and Natural Gas Corp Ltd for about $5 billion as the Indian company looks to make up for flagging production.

Kashagan, the world's biggest oilfield discovery since 1968, holds an estimated 30 billion barrels of oil-in-place, of which 8-12 billion are potentially recoverable. First production from the field is expected in 2013.

India, the world's fourth-biggest oil importer, buys nearly 80 percent of its oil needs as expanding refining capacity has outpaced local oil output. State-run ONGC's local oil output has been almost stagnant for years.

ConocoPhillips said the carrying value of the assets related to its Kashagan interest was about $5.5 billion as of September 30.

The company said it would take an after-tax impairment of about $400 million in the fourth quarter to reduce the carrying value. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2013.

ONGC, India's third-biggest company by market value, has been investing to maintain output from its old fields and has capital spending plans of around 340 billion Indian rupees ($6.12 billion) both this year and next. The company is under pressure from the government to meet rising demand.

The acquisition is the largest ever for ONGC, and marks the biggest outbound deal from India since mobile phone operator Bharti Airtel bought mobile phone operations in 15 African countries for $9 billion in 2010 from Kuwait-based telecoms group Zain .

ONGC Videsh, the arm of ONGC that invests in overseas assets, said the acquisition would likely add 1 million tonnes (20,000 barrels per day) to its annual production over 25 years with the company's share of output significantly higher in later stages of development. ONGC Videsh's production in the year to March 31, 2012 was 8.7 million tonnes.

Kazakhstan, home to 3 percent of the world's recoverable oil reserves and the largest former Soviet oil producer after Russia, has sought to revise deals struck with foreign energy companies in the lean post-Soviet years.

ConocoPhillips has been conducting a disposal program to reduce its non-core overseas assets to reduce debt and increase its exploration and dividend budgets.

It has already exceeded its target of asset sales worth $20 billion by the end of 2012, including the sale of its stake in Lukoil , Russia's second-biggest oil producer.

"(The) purchase price of $5 billion is at the high end of our prior expectation of $4 to $5 billion," analysts at Simmons and Co wrote in a note to clients.

"This is a positive for ConocoPhillips as it marks important progress on their asset divestiture program, which is needed to support the capital program and dividend."

ConocoPhillips shares down slightly at $56.39 in early trading.

The company said it notified government authorities in Kazakhstan, and its partners in the North Caspian Sea production-sharing agreement of its intention to sell the stake.

Kazakh Oil and Gas Minister Sauat Mynbayev last month disclosed ConocoPhillips' plans to sell its stake in the field.

The Kashagan field is jointly controlled by state-run KazMunaiGas and six international companies, including Eni Spa ExxonMobil Corp , Royal Dutch Shell Plc , Total SA and Inpex Corp .

Effects Of Foster Parents On A Child - Ayushveda

Effects Of Foster Parents On A Child With modernisation, men has come to see the upsides of adopting children or setting up foster homes which is for the best of shunned children or children who lost roofs from over their heads and those unfortunate parents who have not been blessed with children, faced lost of loved ones or wish to expand their families by welcoming an outside member in their family as one of their own.

In the advent of rising convenience and human understanding and liberalisation, the process of setting up foster homes or taking up a child as being his or her foster parents has become a piece of cake. A lot of people welcome a child as one of their own and treat him/ her with love and care- just like they would treat their own child.

But, sometimes, parents worry about the effect of being a foster kid on the child or they worry if the child would be able to accept them or not. There is nothing really to worry about. A foster child grows better than any other child. His sense of understanding and independence outdoes the rest of the children. The following are the effects of foster parents on children:-

Effects of Foster Parents on a Child Development

Sense of Independence

Very often it is noticed that children who have foster parents have a higher sense of independence. They will naturally also be better than the average assisted child at taking care of themselves. But this independence can be taken in both ways, good and bad. In the good way the child becomes a self sufficient human being.

In the bad way, the child decides it is ?mature? enough and that he or she does not require her parents anymore. But, they will always respect the obligation of his or her foster parents.

Exposure Level of Child

Absence of a guardian in the house for prolonged years almost always leads to heightened exposure. Without the caring filter that a mother or a father puts to on content that her child is exposed to, the child can sometimes be left to face reality at a young age which at times could prove to be not so good. But, once the child attains foster parents, the child is safe guarded, he or she is protected and is saved from future struggles or difficulties to a great extent.

Lack of Shyness in Decision Making

Being in charge since a young age, the child who has a foster parents is more confident in making decisions and he or she is used to such situations since a young age. This has a greater significance as when the child grows as he or she will exhibit greater confidence.

Foster Parents

Having his or her parents by his or her side will only add to their motivation. They would freely do whatever they would wish to do as they know they have the support of their parents with them.

Recognizes?the Importance of Priorities

With constant guidance of their parents tabulating priorities for them, a child learns the importance of managing priorities which is quite a useful skill to have in today?s modern world.?Such a skill will also help the child steer away from bad influences. He will also know the significance of what he has so he will choose his priorities wisely.

Better Perceptive Abilities

Since he or she is left with foster parents in the most crucial times of his/ her life, the child will have higher perceptive ability due to the higher exposure to a different kind of environment. He will be able to sense things in a better manner and would know what is right or wrong more perfectly. He would have heightened senses of what he should do and what he should not.

Resistance to Loneliness- not Susceptibility!

This is the same case and does not vary from person to person as it is based on the personality of the child and what he or she has been through. A child who has naturally shy will also not be more susceptible to loneliness as he or she has learnt to live with people whom he or she never knew.

effects of foster parents

Especially at the initial developing ages, the child notices the way he or she is treated by his or her new parents and he or she realizes the importance of being loved and this helps in wearing of the shyness from a child. The child will thus become sure of himself/ herself even if his or her parents are not around for a while as his confidence would have been built up by then and the child will naturally adapt by making more friends and thus be resistant to loneliness.

Better at Handling Things

being with foster parents, teaches the child to take things in a better manner, to be more patient and understanding. His or her parents set an example for him so he or her would become very good at taking things than any average child of his or her age.

There are no good or bad consequences of being a foster parent as it all depends on the child, his grasping power and understanding. But usually, a child turns out to be way better than you expected him or her to be and things go really well for both of the involved parties. It seems that in our current age we really do have a choice of making the difference in the lives of a child.

We must simply guide the children to make choices as good as possible. We need to be worry free of the consequences of being foster parents. In reality, the child would always be grateful of getting a shelter over his head and the love, care, concern and economic facilities that you provide him/ her with.

Foster parents really are a blessing in the life of a child and they should keep up the good job without worry or fear. You also need not worry about the child?s future as you are upgrading it by leaps and bounds. The child would not have been able to score a good life, ever, if it had not been for you and your generosity over him.

Engineered bacteria can make the ultimate sacrifice

ScienceDaily (Nov. 20, 2012) ? Scientists have engineered bacteria that are capable of sacrificing themselves for the good of the bacterial population. These altruistically inclined bacteria, which are described online in the journal Molecular Systems Biology, can be used to demonstrate the conditions where programmed cell death becomes a distinct advantage for the survival of the bacterial population.

"We have used a synthetic biology approach to explicitly measure and test the adaptive advantage of programmed bacterial cell death in Escherichia coli," said Lingchong You, senior author of the study and an associate professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Duke University, and the Duke Institute for Genome Sciences & Policy. "The system is tunable which means that the extent of altruistic death in the bacterial population can be increased. We are therefore able to control the extent of programmed cell death as well as test the benefits of altruistic death under different conditions." The lead author of the study is Yu Tanouchi, a graduate student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Anand Pai and Nicolas Buchler also contributed to the work.

Scientists have known for some time that programmed cell death can be linked to the response of bacteria to stressful conditions, for example starvation of amino acids or the presence of competitor molecules. However, it is not clear why cells should choose to die under such conditions since it gives them no immediate advantages. Some researchers have suggested that programmed cell death allows cells to provide benefits to their survivors but until now it has been difficult to test this directly in experiments.

The researchers used synthetic biology procedures to engineer Escherichia coli in such a way that the bacterial cells are capable of suicidal behavior and promoting the good of the bacterial population. To do so they introduced a gene circuit, which consists of two modules, into the bacteria. If the "suicide module" is active it leads to the rupture and death of some bacterial cells when they are challenged with the antibiotic 6-aminopenicillanic acid. If the "public good" module is expressed, a modified form of the enzyme beta-lactamase is produced, which protects surviving cells from rupture or lysis by breaking down the antibiotic. This protection only occurs when the enzyme is released from inside the bacterial cells that make the ultimate sacrifice and die after rupture.

"Our results clearly demonstrate that it is possible to have conditions where the death of some bacteria confers an advantage for the overall population of bacteria," remarked You. "The optimal death rate for the bacterial population emerges after sufficient time has passed and is clearly visible in our system."

The scientists were also able to provide a possible explanation for the "Eagle effect," an unexpected phenomenon where bacteria appear to grow better when treated with higher antibiotic concentrations. "Overall our results fill in a conceptual gap in understanding the evolutionary dynamics of programmed bacterial death during stress and have implications for designing intervention strategies for effective treatment of bacterial infections with antibiotics," concluded You.

  • Ocean Technology Systems (OTS) has added a fully submersible, top of the line, underwater metal detector to their product offering. The OTS owner told us some of the unique features of the the Minelab Excalibur II. It can be used effectively in or out of the water to depths of up to 200ft (66m). The unit is rare in its ability to discriminate objects in salt water. OTS is converting the standard Excalibur II units so that users can listen to the detection audible responses and still hear communications through the same headset. The unit has a street price around $1350 sans the conversion kit.
  • Midland Radio?s XTC point of view underwater video camera, which strongly competes with GoPro, now has a rating down to 200 fsw.
  • Underwater Team Diving (UTD) amazed us with their contribution to the blooming recreational side-mount diving market. Recreational side mount diving is paradigm shift in diving that holds great promise for more comfortable and safer recreational diving. It also can allow divers with back problems a chance to keep diving during their back care periods. The UTD Z-Mount side mount system will be receiving the ScubaGadget best in category award (DEMA show 2012). We are giving them the award because they have the best feature set of all recreational side mount systems we found at the show. It is the only side mount system that is completely scalable from single tank recreational, to double tank technical, to multiple stages and deco trimix, and even to mCCR rebreather diving. Additionally it is the only system that eliminates the need to constantly shift regulators and cycle your breathing between the two tanks to maintain balance. We see this regulator swapping as a key psychological barrier that back mount recreational divers would have to overcome to accept side mount diving. UTD?s system includes a manifold as well as robust low pressure quick disconnects to permit divers to breath from one regulator throughout the dive. You can add an isolation valve to maintain two fully redundant air delivery systems. You can even separate and hand off one tank to another diver with little effort. The UDT system also has the lowest profile bladder (trim device in their words) in the field. We will have more in our DEMA Show 2012 wrap-up and in future articles.

National Bank All-In-One (HELOC) | RateHub Mortgage Blog

What is a home equity line of credit (HELOC)?

A HELOC allows you to borrow money from the equity in your home, but functions like a regular line of credit, so you can choose when and how much you want to borrow.

What is an all-in-one product?

An all-in-one product combines your chequing and savings accounts, a mortgage loan, and a home equity line of credit (HELOC) into one account.

What is the National Bank All-In-One?

The National Bank All-In-One is a product that consolidates all your bank accounts, so that your debt is offset by your chequing and savings accounts. Because all of your accounts are combined, the positive balances in your chequing and savings accounts offset the negative balances on your mortgage and home equity line of credit (HELOC), which helps save you from having to pay interest on the full amount owing.

What is the National Bank All-In-One interest rate?

The National Bank All-In-One has a variable interest rate of Prime + 1.00 per cent, which is currently 4.00 per cent.

The details

For a home equity line of credit, the maximum amount of credit you can access through the National Bank All-In-One is set by a loan-to-value (LTV) ratio. Like most Canadian financial institutions, the line of credit may not exceed 65 per cent of the value of the property.

The bank also offers something called Fixed Payment Options, which allows you to set the principal repayment amount according to your budget and cash flow. There are two options:

  1. A minimum payment: Only the monthly interest (and insurance premiums, if applicable)
  2. A fixed payment: A fixed payment each month, beyond the interest due

The National Bank All-In-One functions like a readvanceable mortgage. That means your credit limit increases dollar-for-dollar as you pay off your principal. For example, let?s assume your monthly payment is $500, of which $300 is interest and $200 is principal. The second you make your monthly payment, National Bank automatically increases your line of credit by $200.

Features:

  • No monthly fee for the main account
  • Each subaccount is $2.50/month
  • Minimum HELOC limit is $25,000
  • Can be used to finance a principal or secondary residence
  • One consolidated monthly statement (i.e. banking, savings, mortgage, HELOC, etc.)
  • Principal payments are readvanceable

Sample HELOC calculation:

  • The value of your property = $350,000
  • The outstanding balance on your mortgage = $150,000

The maximum available credit is calculated using a 65 per cent loan-to-value ratio:

$350,000 x 65% = $227,500

Then, you have to subtract your outstanding mortgage balance:

$227,500 ? $150,000 = $77,500

The maximum amount of equity you could pull from your home is?$77,500, using the National Bank All-In-One.

How the National Bank All-In-One works:

As mentioned before, because all of your banking accounts are combined into one account with subaccounts, any positive balances in your chequing and savings accounts would offset how much you owed on your home equity line of credit. Any incoming deposits (i.e. paycheques) would also offset how much you owe, for the amount of time the money stays in your account.

For example, let?s say you owe $70,000 on your home equity line of credit (HELOC) and you decide to deposit a $10,000 inheritance into your All-In-One account. For the amount of time that stays in your account, you would owe $10,000 less on your HELOC. Since interest is calculated daily, you would save on interest even if the inheritance only stayed in your account for a few days.

The final word

By combining all your debt into a home equity line of credit, you could save on a number of interest payments. For example, if you have a car loan at 5.00 per cent, a credit card at 11.00 per cent, and a big store credit card at 26.00 per cent, your combined debts would only be subject to the National Bank All-In-One interest rate of 4.00 per cent.

One drawback of an all-in-one product is that the interest rate on your mortgage is higher than the average 5-year variable rate, which is currently at 2.55 per cent. Subjecting your mortgage debt to National Bank?s 4.00 per cent rate reflects a premium of 1.45 per cent.

Overall, National Bank?s All-In-One is a product that provides ultimate convenience with accessibility to a home equity line of credit.

Seapunks, Rihanna, And Other Artists Who Steal (SLIDESHOW)

It's been a big week for seapunks. Their young, underwater-themed movement was thrust into the spotlight after two famous people debuted suspiciously seapunky acts over the weekend without crediting the movement's originators. Rihanna's green screened Saturday Night Live performance of "Diamonds," and Azealia Banks' "Atlantis" music video -- dropped a day after -- are below. Both videos take freely from the Lisa Frank aesthetic of seapunk, a web-based art genre that was formed after someone tweeted about a dream he had, about a leather jacket with barnacles as studs. Since then, seapunks have become a legitimate niche culture, obsessed with the kinds of scenes little girls who've just seen "The Little Mermaid" might relate to, and rabidly against interlopers. Rihanna and Banks have both loosely linked themselves to the aesthetic, simply by wearing turquoise, or in Banks' case, comparing herself to a mermaid. But they're famous, and therefore, not allowed in the club.

So what to make of these videos? Tell us you're not seeing more fake dolphins than is standard.

Most are declaring this an unfair fight, arguing the case from a seapunk point of view. But who's protecting the thieves? Jerome LOL -- the pioneering seapunk artist whose fans are particularly mad at Rihanna -- posted his own remix of "Diamonds," weeks before the SNL performance. An effusive review published on Bullett Magazine's web site called the edit "a transcendentally transformative new work of art that somehow improves on the original." Nothing about swaggerjacking Rihanna. Not a line, anywhere, about "capitalist exploitation."

So, double standards. But when the person doing the "borrowing" is worth millions of dollars, is that only fair? And when it comes to imitation, how much is too much? Scroll through our slideshow of the most contentious artist-on-artist thefts, and let us know what you think of the crime in the comments. Art's natural order? Or always wrong?

  • Madonna vs. Guy Bourdin

Madonna's 2003 video for "Hollywood" features imagery very <a href="http://antimadonna.dark-host.com/gallery_unoriginal/unoriginal4.html">close in spirit</a> to the work of the late French fashion photographer Guy Bourdin. Too close, some might say. And one did! Bourdin's son sued the star, saying, "<a href="http://www.thesmokinggun.com/documents/crime/madonna-accused-picture-piracy">it's one thing to draw inspiration; it's quite another to simply plagiarize the heart and soul of my father's work</a>." While the amount Madonna eventually shelled over remains confidential, Bourdin's lawyer called it a "<a href="http://www.thesmokinggun.com/documents/crime/madonna-pays-settle-copyright-lawsuit">very, very successful settlement</a>."

  • Madonna vs. Collette

Then there was "Like A Virgin." Turns out even that iconically Madonna creation may owe a debt (in this case, still unpaid). The New York multimedia artist Colette says Madonna's 1984 album cover <a href="http://www.artinfo.com/news/story/755096/colette-vs-lady-gaga-tk">was essentially lifted </a>from her 1979 album <a href="http://www.ebay.com/itm/JUSTINE-Beautiful-Dreamer-12-NEW-VINYL-DFA-Collette-/190652775821">Beautiful Dreamer</a>.

  • Beyonce vs. Anne Terese De Keersmaeker

Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker called Beyonceout for aping entire sequences (including cinematography and costumes) created by De Keersmaeker in the eighties, for her 2011 "Countdown" video. Among the works Beyonce plundered were De Keersmaker's ballet "Rosas Danst Rosas" and "Achterland." ?This is stealing," the modernist pioneer said in an interview. ?<a href="http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/10/10/beyonce-accused-of-plagiarism-over-video/">What?s rude about it is that they don?t even bother about hiding it</a>.?

  • Rihanna vs. David LaChapelle

You know it's bad when everyone thinks the artist you were "inspired" by directed your music video. <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1353935/Rihannas-S-M-music-video-strikingly-similar-David-LaChapelles-work.html">That's what happened </a>when Rihanna debuted S&M in 2011, a video with individual scenes that bear striking similarities to photographs by David LaChapelle. The Warhol protege filed a million dollar suit against Rihanna, citing <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1657995/rihanna--david-lachapelle-s-m-video.jhtml">eight photographs</a> that were essentially recreated -- from a woman walking a slave on a leash to a zebra-striped boudoir littered with supine bodies. They <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-15369397">settled out of court</a>. Moral: don't hire a music video director with a <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1657995/rihanna--david-lachapelle-s-m-video.jhtml">track record of stealing</a>.

  • Lady Gaga vs. Colette

Lady Gaga is a notorious art sponge, but she joined an illustrious line of borrowers when she prompted Colette, she of Madonna-inspiring fame, to create <a href="http://vimeo.com/34473694">the accusatory video "Looking For Lady Gaga</a>," about the singer's supposedly derivative boudoir installation at Barney's. In the video, the artist compares Gaga's work with her <a href="http://www.collectcolette.com/72-125-The_House_of_Olympia.html">House of Olympia installation</a>, saying she gets "20 million phone calls and emails about that window at Barneys." Colette later softened, calling the singer a <a href="http://www.artinfo.com/news/story/755096/colette-vs-lady-gaga-tk">"daughter" and a "descendant,</a>" which is a nice way of saying you owe me. Her repayment solution? That <a href="http://www.artinfo.com/news/story/755096/colette-vs-lady-gaga-tk">Gaga sponsor a show for her at MoMa</a>.

Surfing With a SUP ? The Latest Trend in Surfing

The hottest and latest trend in water sports is to use an SUP, or a stand up paddleboard.? Essentially, you stand on a very large surfboard and paddle through the water with a long paddle.? While this is a very ancient form of surfing ? early surfing was done on a stand up paddleboard or on a finless surfboard that required you to drag your foot in the water for a fin ? it has become extremely popular because it has become so easy to learn in addition to being a fun leisure activity.

A Moment to Learn, a Lifetime to Master

When you are on calm, flat water, a stand up paddleboard can be very easy to get the hang of.? If you aren?t near a coast with waves, but still want to simulate the feeling of surfing, you can use a stand up paddleboard on any body of water, such as a lake or river.? It also provides a lot of great exercise, which combined with its easy learning curve has made it popular with children and pensioners alike as a way to stay active.?

For people who want a good workout, taking an inflatable SUP onto a river and paddling into a standing wave can provide a great amount of exercise.? This is because the standing wave in a river?s rapids is caused by rocks, meaning once you paddle into it, you will have a wave to ride until you either fall or simply exhaust yourself.? An inflatable SUP is recommended for this, since they are softer and provide higher durability when it comes to rocks.? A regular stand up paddle board could become seriously damaged.? Another benefit of an inflatable SUP is the option to deflate it when you are done for the day and heading home, making it a lot more portable.

The Ultimate In Cross Training

When you use a stand up paddleboard as a way to get a great workout, you will not be disappointed.? It is the best way to achieve a complete workout that targets your core muscles.? It will also help you build up your endurance, teach you balance, and with all the paddling involved can also provide you with a good cardio workout all at the same time.

It isn?t uncommon to hear a stand up paddleboard be referred to as an oversized surfboard.? They are larger, but mostly thicker in order to provide better floatation.? The size of a stand up paddleboard ? be it a normal board or an inflatable SUP ? will range typically anywhere between 9 and a half feet to 12 and a half feet long.? They will also have three fins to help assist with turning and to provide greater stability.

Because you can use an SUP anywhere, they are starting to completely reinvent the idea of surfing, especially since it is much easier for people to get started using a stand up paddleboard than it is a traditional surfboard.? You can be on your and feet surfing in no time with an SUP, enjoying all the fun and adventure the water has to offer you.

Senate fails again to advance cybersecurity bill

14 hrs.

The?Senate failed again to advance legislation to protect the U.S. electrical grid and other critical industries from cyberattack, setting the stage for President Barack Obama to sign an executive order to improve the country's digital defenses.

A motion to limit debate and force a vote on the bill fell well short on Wednesday of the 60 votes needed to pass, with only 51 senators backing the measure. Democrats and Republicans disagreed over the role the Homeland Security Department and other federal agencies should play in protecting essential businesses from cyberattacks.

The Senate also failed in August to move the bill forward.

The Obama administration has said that if Congress does not pass cybersecurity legislation, the president will act to protect critical infrastructure companies from cyberthreats and electronic espionage.?

jeffrey nullification: Allison: Internet and Business Online - mas0706 ...

Using the Internet to develop a business is making it possible for individuals from all walks of life to access paying customers that fall outside their own sphere of influence.

In small towns around the globe home-based businesses are helping to sustain families while contributing to the local economy by bringing non-traditional revenue to the community.

Homes and offices have an illuminated computer screen that is viewed in the pursuit of accessing a global market. Similar screens are used by consumers looking for the perfect gift for a hard to buy for person or for a product they need and can't find elsewhere.

Sometimes the point of purchase is based on nostalgia as the consumer recalls products from their past that can still be found online. For the business owner this is where affiliate revenue programs can be beneficial.

There are online businesses that specialize in products from other countries. In effect these businesses can sell products at a better price with reduced shipping expenses because they import the goods for resell in a specific country. For instance in I wanted Toffee Pops from Australia, but I live in America I can find an online supplier in the United States that will provide Toffee Pops for less than it would take to have them sent from Australia.

The above scenario appeals to the emotional connection an individual might have if they move to another country or experienced the product while visiting that country. This is why many grocery stores have ethnic food sections for those who may want a taste of home. The same situation exists online.

It seems that almost every type of online business may find a niche. If you want railway engineer hats you can find them online. It may seem that there would not be a large market for this item, but because it is available to a global audience it can be readily found online when it may not be found in local (or even regional) stores.

In so many ways business online is making it much more possible for virtually anyone to find a way to develop a revenue making idea or tap into an existing revenue stream through affiliate revenue programs.

There may not be the dot com boom to experience online anymore, but a respectable side business can be developed with a potential for making this non traditional revenue source more prominent in the facilitation of family wealth management.

From homes in all shapes and sizes business is being done and it is contributing to the betterment of family life around the world. For those who actively pursue online business they are discovering a greater amount of personal satisfaction in their online business pursuits.

ASUS, Google offer monetary compensation for Nexus 7 tablets bought before price drop

Bought yourself a shiny new Nexus 7 just before the priced dropped on October 29th and feel a bit slighted? ASUS and Google want to turn your frown upside down, each offering their own compensation. Folks in Europe who purchased any variant of the tablet from ASUS prior to October 30th are eligible to a redeem a 25-pound or 30-euro coupon for its online shop. Apparently, the deal has been in place since October 30th, and you'll have until the 30th of this month to submit your proof of purchase (from sanctioned dealers, naturally) and apply. Sure, it may not be as nice as a Google Play credit for apps or cash in-pocket, but at least ASUS is showing it can share at least some love for early adopters. Europeans should move their cursors over to the ASUS source link below for all the details.

Tracking back to Google, Droid-Life notes that Google's price protection policy might have you covered for some cash-back, as well. If you purchased the 16GB model from Google Play between the 14th and the 29th of October, you have until about the 13th of this month to get a refund for the price difference (15 days from the initial price drop). As always, check out the Google link below for more details.
