(AP) ? Margus Hunt knew he had eight hours to fill on the flight over the Pacific Ocean, so he asked the SMU staff to put together film of Fresno State for him to study. He hit the Bulldogs like a tidal wave Monday night in the Hawaii Bowl.

The 6-foot-8 defensive end raced around right tackle to blindside Derek Carr and force a fumble. Hunt smashed into running back Robbie Rouse on a delayed handoff and forced another fumble. On a three-man rush, he sacked Carr in the end zone for a safety.

It was an inspiring performance by the senior from Estonia, and it set the tone for the Mustangs' 43-10 win.

"That was a lot of fun," Hunt said. "We knew from the get-go it was going to be a Monday night football game, the only game in the nation. We wanted to show our skills and make some plays. To me personally ... this is where it all started. It's good to end on this note."

The Mustangs (7-6) also returned two interceptions for touchdowns, giving them eight for the season to tie the NCAA record set last year by Southern Miss. Hayden Greenbauer picked off Carr and returned it 83 yards with 1:14 left, the final blow to a miserable night for the Bulldogs (9-4).

SMU had seven sacks, more than double the most Fresno State had given up in a game all year.

Garrett Gilbert was effective with his arm and his legs, running for a 17-yard touchdown for the first score of the game and throwing a perfect strike to Darius Johnson for a 21-yard score to answer the Bulldogs' only touchdown. He rushed for 98 yards on 18 carries and threw for 212 yards.

But this game was decided by the Mustangs' defense, with Hunt leading the way. He was voted the game's MVP.

"We tried some slide protections to 92 (Hunt). You know, they beat us," Fresno State coach Tim DeRuyter said. "We tried going empty to spread things out and get it out quick, we tried to max protect. Everything we tried didn't work."

Fresno State, the Mountain West Conference champion, has lost its last four bowl games.

SMU, which went 25 years without a bowl after its NCAA death penalty, now has played in a school-record four straight bowls, winning the last three. Hunt was a mystery when that run started in 2009, a gold medalist in the shot put and discus in Beijing at the 2006 Junior World Championships who came to SMU for track and field and turned to football when it was his only hope of scholarship money.

SMU coach June Jones has a knack for taking a chance on athletes from other sports, and he liked what he saw, from the 82-inch wing span to the 4.7 speed in the 40.

"It's not hard for me to see a world-class athlete who can run like that, has strength like that, has an arm length like that," Jones said. "The first scrimmage we had ... the only thing I didn't know was if he was going to be tough enough. The first play we ran a trap and hit him real hard, and he wanted to fight. I said, 'OK, we may have a player here.'

"His best football is ahead of him," Jones said. "I was really excited, on a national stage, for him to have that kind of a game."

The Bulldogs turned in a dud.

Fresno State, which had averaged just over 47 points in its last five games, was shut out in the first half for the first time in two years. Carr was too busy running for his life to get the Bulldogs into any kind of offensive rhythm. And when the Bulldogs finally scored with 10:21 left in the third quarter, Gilbert led the Mustangs on a 75-yard drive that he finished with a pinpoint pass to Johnson in the corner for a touchdown.

"That drive there put the game away in essence," Gilbert said. "For us to respond like that and put six points on that board was big."

It allowed Jones to walk out of Aloha Stadium with yet another win.

He was the coach at Hawaii for eight years, leaving after its unbeaten regular season in 2007. Jones now has won 10 straight games in Aloha Stadium, dating to a December 2006 loss to Oregon State.

"I just want to say 'Aloha' to the seniors," Jones said during the trophy presentation. "We said we were going to do it and we did it."

Without hardly breaking a sweat.

The 10 points matched the fewest Fresno State has scored this year, dating to its 20-10 loss to Boise State. Carr was 33-of-54 passing for 362 yards, but most of that came late in the game when the Bulldogs were trying to catch up.

He was overwhelmed by the Mustangs' defensive front, particularly Hunt, who had two sacks, two forced fumbles and three tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

"When you go three-and-out, it feels like there's no rhythm at all," Carr said.

After a dull, scoreless opening quarter, Gilbert shook off one tackle and scored on a 17-yard run. The defense took over from there.

Hunt blew past right tackle Alex Fifita and blindsided Carr, dropping him flat as the ball came loose and was scooped up by Aaron Davis, who returned it 23 yards to the Fresno State 16 until he fumbled it out of bounds. SMU had to settle for a field goal. On the next series, Carr scrambled backward and couldn't escape an 18-yard sack to the 6, and then Hunt sacked him in the end zone for a safety.

Hunt wasn't finished. On second-and-7 from the 33, Carr gave it to Robbie Rouse on a delayed handoff, right about the time Hunt showed up to disrupt the play and cause another fumble that Taylor Reed recovered. That drive went backward, and Chase Hover connected from 48 yards.

Jones' only concern was having to settle for field goals, fearing that might come back to haunt the Mustangs given Fresno State's explosive offensive. Not to worry. The SMU defense dominated to the very last score.

sensation revkah: What Are the Symptoms of Uterine Cancer ...

Cancer is one of the most dreaded diseases in the world. The body cells start functioning in an abnormal way in the person suffering from cancer and the tumors are formed in the affected area of the body. Breast, ovarian, cervical and uterine cancers are those types of cancers that target only the women as these are related to the female body organs.

If we talk about the uterine cancer, it is in fact related to the very important organ of the female reproductive system called the uterus and usually occurs in the women between the ages of 50 to 70 years. This cancer has different types including uterine sarcomas, endometrial cancer and cervical cancer. Each type affects different parts and tissues of the female uterus e.g. endometrial cancer (also called endometrial carcinoma) is related to the uterus lining or endometrium. The uterine sarcoma (also called leiomyosarcomas) affects the muscular layer of the uterus and cervical cancer is related to the lower portion of the uterus.

Among these types, the endometrial cancer is one that is generally referred to as the uterine cancer. The endometrial cancer is so deadly that it is believed to be the third most common gynecologic cancer (after ovarian and cervical cancers) that causes death to the women.

This cancer usually affects the women after the occurrence of the menopause (the phase in a woman?s life when menstrual cycle gets stopped). There are some common symptoms of this cancer though these may differ to some extent from person to person.

The most general symptom of this cancer in a woman is the abnormal vaginal bleeding even after her menopause. However the excessive menstrual bleeding in a woman in her premenopausal period shouldn?t be ignored too. The other symptoms include the unusual non-bloody vaginal discharge, lower abdominal pain, abnormal weight loss, difficult and painful urination and an extreme pain during intercourse.

Every woman is needed to know about the basic symptoms of the uterine cancer so that if she finds any of them in herself, she may urgently contact her physician. The importance of seeking the timely medical advice after finding some of these symptoms is very high as it may help to diagnose the uterine cancer at some early stage and you must know that this cancer can be treated effectively at the early stages. Besides, if the endometrial cancer is diagnosed after the full medical check up of a woman, the proper measure can be taken at the right time in order to avoid further complications.

Super Foods for Sinusitis Relief | Natural Holistic Health Blog

Super Foods for Sinusitis Relief

Including certain super foods in your diet can help prevent and treat sinusitis

Sinusitis simply means inflammation or swelling of the sinuses, but this gives little indication of the misery and pain this condition can cause.

Ongoing sinusitis, sinusitis that continues for at least 3 weeks, impacts an estimated 32 million individuals in the United States alone.

As further evidence that sinusitis is a prevalent and expensive health condition, it is a staggering fact that people in the US shell out millions of dollars each year for medicines which claim to offer relief from their sinusitis symptoms.

What are the Symptoms of Sinusitis?

Signs and symptoms of sinusitis may include a fever, weakness and fatigue, a cough which may be more extreme at night, and a runny, drippy nose or nasal blockage.

In addition, drainage of mucus from the sinuses down the back of the throat (postnasal drip) can trigger a sore throat.

And yet, by including a few of the super foods from various vitamin groups, we can reduce our odds of becoming stricken with this painful and aggravating malady.

Super Foods for Sinusitis

Citrus fruits, tomatoes, cauliflower, red berries,? potatoes, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, red and green bell peppers, cabbage, and spinach are all high quality dietary sources of vitamin C, which can help promote a healthier and stronger immune system.

The B-complex vitamins are in fact a group of eight vitamins which include thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3) and folic acid (B9), and are key for a well-balanced nervous system which functions properly, processing carbs for energy, and the production of red blood cells.

Organ meats, whole grain cereals, beans, oatmeal, potatoes, bananas, salmon,? and spinach are only a very few of the numerous food members of the vitamin B group with higher than average levels of this group of nutrients.

Vegetable oils, green leafy vegetables, nuts, and fortified cereals are standard food sources of vitamin E, an antioxidant which serves to safeguard your cells from the effects of free radicals. Free radicals are potentially harmful by-products of energy metabolism.

Free radicals can harm cells and may contribute to the development of both cardiovascular disease and cancer. Vitamin E has also been discovered to play a favorable part in immune function.

What Else Can You Do to Help Prevent & Treat Sinusitis?

Breathing in the steam from a vaporizer or a hot cup of water can soothe swollen and irritated sinus cavities. Using essential oils in the steam treatment including Eucalyptus, Lavender, Thyme, Rosemary or Ravensara can add to the positive benefit of this therapy.

An additional therapy is the use of a saline nasal spray, which can be bought at your local pharmacy and in many grocery stores. A hot water bottle; hot, wet compresses; or an electric heating pad applied over the painful sinus area also can be soothing.

An individual vulnerable to sinus problems, particularly one who also suffers from allergies, should stay away from cigarette or cigar smoke and other air pollutants. Inflammatory reaction in the nose caused by allergies predisposes a person to a powerful reaction to all irritants. Consuming alcohol also results in swelling of the nasal-sinus membranes. Try also to avoid dairy products, as they encourage your body to create more mucus.

Sinus Soothe is a safe, non-addictive, FDA-registered natural remedy containing 100% homeopathic ingredients selected to relieve sinusitis symptoms, including sinus congestion, inflammation and pain. Sinus Soothe may be taken at the first sign of sinusitis, as it works quickly to reduce sinus pressure, excess mucus and open nasal passages, as well as relieve sinus pressure headaches.

This remedy contains a selection of homeopathic ingredients known to support overall sinus health, without side effects. Sinus Soothe is taken internally and presented in a convenient, concentrated tincture formula. It is easy to ingest and hassle?free with no artificial colors or preservatives. It is safe for all ages, including pregnant women or those who may be breastfeeding.

German politicians allege post-election plan to cut budget

BERLIN (Reuters) - The junior political partners of German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned on Sunday against any attempt to raise taxes after next year's election as Europe's champion of budget discipline struggles to balance its books.

The Finance Ministry has denied a Der Spiegel news magazine report that Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble wants to raise value-added tax to a uniform 19 percent, eliminating a discounted 7 percent rate on many items to bring in an extra 23 billion euros ($30 billion) each year.

It also denied on Friday that Schaeuble planned to cut social spending, to help bring German debt back within the limit that Berlin insisted on setting as a condition for countries to gain admission to the currency union.

Germany has been pushing for budget austerity in other euro zone countries. Until now, Germans have been largely spared such measures but while Germany's debt is falling relative to gross domestic product, it is still at 81.5 percent, well above the 60 percent euro zone ceiling.

Volker Wissing, parliamentary floor leader of Germany's Free Democrats (FDP), told Welt am Sonntag newspaper his party would not support any measures that raise burdens on taxpayers. "If he (Schaeuble) wants to raise revenues (with a VAT increase), then he'll have to give taxpayers something back somewhere else," Wissing said.

The FDP has fought hard to keep the discounted VAT rate for select industries, such as hotels, and items such as food, books and public transport.

Der Spiegel also said the Finance Ministry has drafted plans for an extensive austerity program after September's election that would cut social spending and hit pensioners in order to help the federal government balance its budget by 2016.

"The report is wrong," said a Finance Ministry spokesman. "There are no such plans for after the election." But he said the ministry was working on getting a balanced budget in 2013.

The opposition Social Democrats (SPD) and Left party also condemned the reported plans to cut social spending.

Germany will have a balanced budget in 2012 thanks to robust economic growth. The finance ministry expects surpluses of 0.5 percent of GDP in 2013 and 2014.

The SPD and their Greens allies hope to defeat Merkel's centre-right coalition in September. Opinion polls show the SPD-Greens at about 43 percent while Merkel's Christian Democrats CDU and their Bavarian allies are at about 40 percent. The FDP are below the 5 percent threshold needed for seats.

Joachim Poss, SPD deputy parliamentary floor leader, also accused Schaeuble of trying to keep plans to raise taxes and cut spending secret until after the January 20, 2013 election in Lower Saxony state, where polls show Merkel's CDU in danger of losing power to the centre-left SPD and Greens.

According to Der Spiegel, the Finance Ministry also wants to cut subsidies for the health care system by 10 billion euros a year, extend the retirement age, stiffen the penalties for early retirees and cut widows' and widowers' pensions.

(AP) ? People around the world are grieving with residents of Newtown, and many are expressing their support by sending toys, money and other gifts to the town.

They were moved by the shocking murders of 20 little children and six women at Sandy Hook Elementary School just over a week ago.

The outpouring of tens of thousands of teddy bears, Barbie dolls, soccer balls, board games and more has come from toy stores, organizations and individuals worldwide.

"It's their way of grieving. They say, 'I feel so bad, I just want to do something to reach out,'" said Bobbi Veach, who was helping out Saturday at Edmond Town Hall, where all of Newtown's children were invited to choose a toy.

Even as the town was trying to spread Christmas joy on Saturday, tiny victims of the massacre were still being buried. A service was held in Ogden, Utah, for 6-year-old Emilie Parker. Others were held in Connecticut for 7-year-old Josephine Gay and 6-year-old Ana Marquez-Greene.

In Ogden, people tied pink ribbons around trees and utility poles in memory of Emilie, who was buried at Evergreen Memorial Park next to her maternal grandfather, who died 2? months earlier.

Dozens of emergency responders paid their respects at the start of the service for Josephine at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Newtown, walking through the church and up to the altar.

A horse-drawn carriage brought the miniature coffin of Ana to The First Cathedral church in Bloomfield, where 1,000 mourners gathered to bid goodbye. The service included a performance by Harry Connick, Jr., who has played with the girl's jazz saxophonist father, Jimmy Greene.

Police say 20-year-old Adam Lanza was the killer. They say he had killed his mother earlier across town and took his own life after the school massacre. Police still don't know why he did it.

Millions of dollars have poured into Newton in the aftermath of the tragedy. The United Way of Western Connecticut said the official fund for donations had $2.8 million in it on Saturday. Others sent envelopes stuffed with cash to pay for coffee at the general store, and a shipment of cupcakes arrived from a gourmet bakery in Beverly Hills, California.

The Postal Service reported a six-fold increase in mail in the town and set up a unique post office box to handle it. Some letters were addressed to the "First Responders" or just "The People of Newtown." One card arrived from Georgia addressed to "The families of 6 amazing women and 20 beloved angels." Many contained checks.

"This is just the proof of the love that's in this country," Postmaster Cathy Zieff said.

Peter Leone said he was busy at his Newtown General Store when he got a phone call from a woman in Alaska who wanted to give him her credit card number.

"She said, 'I'm paying for the next $500 of food that goes out your door,'" Leone said. "About a half hour later another gentleman called, I think from the West Coast, and he did the same thing for $2,000."

The basement of the town hall building resembled a toy store, with piles of stuffed animals, dolls, games, and other gifts. They all were inspected and examined by bomb-sniffing dogs. The children could choose whatever they wanted.

Newtown resident Amy Mangold, director of the local Parks and Recreation department, attended with her 12-year-old daughter, Cory. She acknowledged that most attendees could afford to buy their own gifts but said "this means people really care about what's happening here. They know we need comfort and want to heal."

Many people have placed flowers, candles and stuffed animals at makeshift memorials that have popped up all over town. Others are stopping by the Edmond Town Hall to drop off food, toys or cash. About 60,000 teddy bears were donated, said Ann Benoure, a social services caseworker who was working at the town hall.

Tom Mahoney, the building administrator who's in charge of handling gifts, said the town plans to donate whatever is left to shelters or other charities.

In addition to the town's official fund, other private funds have been set up. Former Sandy Hook student Ryan Kraft, who once was Lanza's babysitter, set up a fund with other alumni that has collected almost $150,000. It is earmarked for the Sandy Hook PTA.

Rabbi Shaul Praver of Congregation Adath Israel is raising money for a memorial to the victims. He said one man wrote a check for $52,000 for the project.

Several colleges, including the University of Connecticut, have set up scholarship funds for Sandy Hook students and relatives of victims.

A board of Newtown community leaders is being established to determine where they money is most needed, said Isabel Almeida with the local United Way.

While the town is grateful for all the support, Almeida said, it has no more room for gifts. She encouraged people to donate to others in memory of Sandy Hook victims.

"Send those teddy bears to a school in your community or an organization that serves low-income children, who are in need this holiday season, and do it in memory of our children," she said.

Social networking - Professional Security Magazine Online

Love it or hate it, social networking has firmly embedded itself into the fabric of our world, writes Joanne Rogers of CS Risk Management 2012. The likes of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn can be powerful business tools, especially for marketing, communication and recruitment purposes, she says.

But there is also the less appealing nature of the beast. Provide employees with access to the internet and most will check their online profiles at least once during the day and the resulting downtime can quickly accumulate. But, to a business, a far greater threat than the lack of productivity is the security of what is shared online through these networks.
So what are the benefits and risks to businesses when engaging with the social media phenomenon?

Risks, benefits

? Social networking can be used for marketing, expanding commercial reach and advertising, with the only tangible cost being the time needed to maintain the account;
? Used appropriately, social networking sites can be used to communicate easily with existing business contacts and connect with new ones;
? A regularly updated online presence can have a positive effect on reputation, reinforcing the brand image and demonstrating awareness of current trends;
? There are no geographical restrictions providing potential to reach new areas with little or no expense;
? Can be used to motivate, by building and maintaining relationships between leadership and employees; and
? Build company culture and communicate policy changes and announcements.

Risks
? Social networking sites themselves are not generally a concern, it is the behaviour of the users that presents a risk;
? When considering the possibility of leakage of confidential information or intellectual property, exposure through word of mouth can be hard enough to control but words can be forgotten. An individual making a comment on the internet to an audience of thousands greatly increases this threat and posts can be found through a search engine indefinitely;
? Viruses and worms are often incorporated into fake profiles, e-mails or postings from Friends. Careless use could lead to inadvertent downloading of malware, spyware, adware or ransomware, or even the hijacking of the account; and
? There is a threat of exposure to offensive web content via links contained in e-mails, posts and tweets.
After reviewing these risks and benefits, there are several options available to businesses when considering the use of social networks.
? Allow unrestricted access to social networking sites: providing employees with unrestricted access could boost morale, however there is the potential for this access to be exploited;
? Allow restricted access to specific sites and/or at specific times: allowing employees access to certain sites, perhaps those designed for business networking, or allowing access to personal sites only outside of business hours or during lunch;
? Allow access to social networking sites only to those authorised to use a business profile: for example marketing teams who update the site with business related information;
? Block access to all non-business related sites for all employees: only allow access to sanctioned business related programs; and
? Block internet access to all: this is an unlikely option since many companies now use internet based programmes for day to day operations.

Social Networking Policy
For those businesses that decide to use or allow access to social networking sites, it is crucial to implement and maintain a social networking policy. The policy will provide employees with guidance so that they are accountable for their actions. While specific components of the policy will vary dependant on the nature of the organisation and how they use social networking, there are several elements that should form the basis for any social media plan.

Guidelines and Restrictions
It is important to establish a level of control that provides protection whilst allowing the informality that is the foundation of social networking. Business data should be classified so that employees are fully aware of what sensitive information is and what can and cant be mentioned on profiles or in posts. Also determine who is authorised to access corporate content and modify accounts on behalf of the company.
Remember that mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs are also at risk from hackers, so be sure to specify if employees are permitted to access social networking from these devices.

Education and training
Educating employees on the acceptable use of social media is essential to reducing the risks. Each employee represents the company and a thoughtless tweet about a product launch or personnel change has the potential to damage reputations.
Consider limiting the posting of corporate data unless authorised and clearly state the consequences of failure to follow policy: disciplinary or dismissal procedures can be implemented for employees who violate policies. Although this may seem heavy handed, prevention is always better than cure.

Monitoring
Once a policy has been approved, it is important to monitor the activity relating to the business. Check the networks for the company or product name, find out what is being said. If customers are losing faith in the company, take the opportunity for promotion by addressing concerns. Failure to monitor on a regular basis could lead to loss of sales and damage to reputation.
Monitoring can also be an opportunity to see what people are interested in, helping to shape future campaigns.

Maintenance and updates
It is worth remembering that unless your web security software is capable of fulfilling the requirements stated in the policy, the policy itself will be useless. Regular reviews of software capabilities, changes to programs and security settings, should be undertaken.

Incident response plan
If a business faces a crisis, for example loss of systems or product faults, an incident response plan should include measures for addressing issues via social media. Recalling products and providing updates on service availability can provide customers with assurance that the issue is being dealt with. If handled swiftly and correctly this action could limit the impact on reputation.

What next
Social networking has evolved so rapidly that many companies struggle to keep up with the changes and subsequent implications. The growth shows no signs of slowing, so it is important to remain vigilant to the threats. Education is essential across all levels of the business to ensure that the advantages of using social media are not negated by the risks.

Central US storm dumps snow, cuts power

Much of the nation is dealing with a big blast of winter as a massive snowstorm barrels from the Rockies to the Midwest, with some parts of Colorado buried under more than a foot of snow. NBC's Mike Seidel reports.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Updated at 10 a.m. ET: A major snowstorm sweeping across the central U.S. on Thursday brought blizzard warnings and dumped around a foot of snow on parts of the Central Plains.

The southern end of the storm front produced high winds overnight that cut power to more than 350,000 customers and caused damage in Mobile, Ala., possibly by a twister.?Tornado warnings remained in effect in parts of Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama early Thursday.

At least three deaths were tied to the storm front.?In Wisconsin, slick road conditions led to two fatalities. And in Utah, a woman who tried to walk for help after her car became stuck in snow died Tuesday night, officials said late Wednesday. Search and rescue crews on snowmobiles found her buried in the snow just a few miles from her car.

On Thursday, the storm front will make travel "very difficult or impossible" across "a wide swath of the Plains and Upper Midwest,"?The Weather Channel reported, disrupting flights at?O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, the nation's second-busiest.

Blizzard or winter storm warnings have been issued for 16 states, meteorologist Mike Seidel told TODAY.?

Snow warnings have also intensified, with Des Moines, Iowa, seeing nearly a foot by early Thursday.

National Weather Service meteorologist Scott Dergan said the snow cover would drag temperatures much lower in Nebraska and Iowa.

"We're talking single digits," Dergan said. "We may even see some sub-zero temperatures in Nebraska. This cold weather will stick around for several days, maybe until the day after Christmas. So we're definitely going to have a white Christmas."

In Chicago, up to 4 inches is forecast at O'Hare airport, Weather Channel forecaster Brian Fortier told NBC News, including the possibility of a heavy snow shower there Thursday evening. Several dozen flights were canceled there Thursday morning, and many more were delayed.

Airlines were letting travelers flying to some Midwest cities change their bookings without fees.

In Alabama, a powerful storm peeled the roofs off buildings and toppled cars and trucks in Mobile, but injured no one, Al.com reported. Arkansas also saw damage from high winds.

This vehicle at a car dealership was flipped over by a storm in Mobile, Ala., on Thursday, Dec. 20.

The storm earlier delivered heavy snow and strong winds to parts of the West, where trucks tangled on icy roads on the Oregon and California state line. In West Texas, winds from the same system kicked up a dust storm that caused a series of accidents along Interstate 27, resulting in one death and more than a dozen injuries, NBC affiliate KCBD reported.

As snow blew sideways in Nebraska on Wednesday night, the Nebraska State Patrol closed parts of Interstate 80, a major east-west highway.?

In Wisconsin, Gov. Scott Walker declared a state of emergency on Wednesday. Schools were canceled in advance of heavy snowfall and the University of Wisconsin-Madison postponed Thursday?s final exams.

Snow-bound traffic ground to a halt in Superior, Colo., on Wednesday.

Before the storm, several cities in the Midwest had broken records for the number of consecutive days without measurable snow.

In Chicago, people were making a run on snow shovels and salt ahead of what would be the first snow to hit the city in 290 days (the record is 296). The Home Depot in Lincoln Park sold 50 shovels by 1 p.m.,?NBCChicago.com reported.

"It's Chicago, anything can happen," resident Louis Collazo said. "I'm ready for it. Bring it on."

The storm has package delivery companies nervously checking the weather forecast during this busy time of year. "We?re closely monitoring the storm,"?FedEx spokesman Scott Fiedler told NBC News. "We have a team of 15 meteorologists who track the weather around the world every day."

After blowing through the Midwest, the storm will move on to the East Coast in the form of wind and rain, according to The Weather Channel.

NBC News' Isolde Raftery and A. Pawlowski, as well as The Associated Press and Reuters, contributed to this report.

NBC's Janet Shamlian reports on the busiest delivery day of the year for UPS, which is prepped to make 28 million deliveries by the end of the business day ahead of the threatening holiday storm.

Stocks sink as budget deadline nears; Dow off 99

Stocks are ending lower on Wall Street as a year-end deadline nears with no deal in hand how to cut the U.S. government's budget deficit.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 99 points to end at 13,252 Wednesday, following two days of 100-point gains.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 11 points to 1,436. The Nasdaq composite index also fell 11 points to end at 3,044.

The White House threatened to veto House Speaker John Boehner's backup plan for averting automatic tax increases and government spending cuts that are set to take effect Jan. 1 if no deal is reached on cutting the government's budget deficit.

Falling stocks narrowly outnumbered rising ones on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was below the recent average at 3.8 billion.

2012's legacy: The Monitor's Top 11 US stories

People celebrate as they watch President Obama's acceptance speech broadcast live in New York's Times Square following his reelection. The presidential campaign put a spotlight on young Americans ? those under age 29 made up 19 percent of the overall vote. (Andrew Kelly/Reuters)

The year 2012 caught America in a fitful mood, buffeted by rancorous national elections, meteorological monsters, school gunfire, economic ups and downs, and the bitter legacies of race and terrorism.

But how Americans have responded, historians suggest, goes beyond understanding tragedies like the Trayvon Martin shooting or the US Supreme Court's ruling that struck down large parts of Arizona's tough immigration law.

From the wreckage of superstorm Sandy came outpourings of sympathy and healing. Americans searched for solutions to unemployment and a more tumultuous climate. And they asked new questions, such as about America's grip on the changing realities in the Middle East.

Among other things, the presidential campaign put a spotlight on young Americans, showing their strong participation in civic life. Those under age 29 made up 19 percent of the overall vote.

"For all the sort of media controversies and all of the tensions that get covered on the front pages, what any number of these [top stories] will show is that we are a country that is more diverse, inclusive, transparent, and that ultimately we are a nation that has to feel a good deal of hope and optimism about this next generation," says American University historian Leonard Steinhorn. "For every unfortunate and tragic Trayvon Martin case or Colorado shooting, you have a younger generation that is probably the least prejudiced, least bigoted, and most inclusive in our nation's history."

Polaroid IM1836 Android-based mirrorless camera appears on Russian site ahead of CES

Polaroid IM1836 Androidbased mirrorless camera appears on Russian site ahead of CES

It looks like Polaroid's betting big on Android. Judging by a product image and description leaked on a Russian social media site, the company is gearing up to launch an Android-based mirrorless ILC, perhaps as soon as CES. Specs are fairly light, but the compact camera does appear to include an 18-megapixel sensor, a 3.5-inch touchscreen, 10-30mm lens, a pop-up flash, HDMI output and built-in WiFi. As TechRadar points out, the camera looks very similar to the Nikon J1 and J2, and it also features a kit lens with the same zoom range. That's not to suggest that this shooter will share components with its pint-sized counterpart, but we wouldn't rule it out entirely, especially considering that Polaroid doesn't have its own inventory of interchangeable lenses. There's no release schedule suggested, but the timing is curious, especially considering that the company made its first Android announcement at last year's CES. Will your next mirrorless ILC be a Polaroid?

Sharyn Bires: Two Words for Every Bad Date I Ever Had

I'm not sure if it was the warm Hawaiian breezes, the sparking ocean or the doorman who mysteriously knew my name, but the moment I arrived at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, I knew I'd never quite be the same.

Shortly into my stay, I met Clifford Nae'ole, the resort's Hawaiian cultural advisor and a gentleman who seems to carry generations of wisdom in every word he speaks. He told me about a spiritual exercise entitled "Hiuwai and E ala e," where he meets with people in the pre-dawn hours at the beach. There, participants reflect upon negative actions from the past that may be affecting their well-being today. The purpose of this exercise is to recognize those actions and then to wash them away into the ocean, freeing you to move clearly into the new day.

I love the idea of this process, especially as it relates to dating. Like many online daters, I've indulged in the negativities of my own experiences. I admit I did my fair share of regaling friends and family with my horror stories often becoming the "single girl floor show" at parties. As I sat on the beach in Maui, watching the sun rise in the sky, I realized the most important thing a woman can possibly know about dating: Each bad date is a gift.

I thought back to the "player" I went out with, the man who was so smooth and suggestive that he couldn't have made his end goal more obvious. At the time, I loathed what he stood for, but now I realize that he taught me the importance of choosing to date men who were looking for true commitment. Then there was the man I dated who was just like me in every way -- same education, same interests, similar job. I went out with him several times, thinking everything was just too perfect on paper. Honestly, I hated the guy. Lesson learned: Don't date yourself. I thought about the MBAs and entrepreneurs who were so impressive with their chef dinners and extensive expense accounts. Each of them taught me that I admire drive, but I need more emotion than they can offer. I remembered the men I liked who didn't like me back and was reminded of my own vulnerability and how easy it is to be hurt. Most of all, I thought about the many men who are smart, talented and wonderful in a million ways, but with whom I just didn't "click." I realized that each one of them kept me going. Each one of them made me feel like there was hope of finding "the one" in the end. Throughout this process of dating, I met many people. Several became close friends, some are now dating friends of mine -- and one of them became the love of my life.

The day after that sunrise, I stood on a seaside bluff, encircled by a ring of flowers. There, my boyfriend knelt before me and asked me to marry him. It was the happiest, most meaningful moment of my life. When I said yes, it was with a confidence fueled by enough experience and history to know that this is truly "it." Without every disappointment, frustration and let down leading up to meeting him, I would not be the same. So as my own personal "Hiuwai and E ala e," I have just two words to say to every bad date I ever had: Thank you.

Tips For Traversing The Commercial Real Estate Market

Buying commercial property can be majorly rewarding for you or it can cause you a serious headache. This type of real-estate purchasing is not advanced science, nevertheless it requires some knowledge so you don?t end up losing cash. This list of tips should put you ?in the know? on how to be a smarter buyer.

Don't forget to check out commercial property auctions when you're searching for property to purchase. You might get a building for an inexpensive price if you're at the right place and right time. Most auctions have internet sites where you can see all the information about the property, and get pre-qualified all from the comfortable surroundings of your home.

When making an investment in commercial real-estate, you need to look over the financing and know if the mortage payment is just interest, or whether it includes principal and interest. In addition, you really ought to know the amortization schedule that is utilized to figure the principal payment. The most effective way to grow equity is having principal and interest charges over a short amortisation period.

Before you invest in something, you should be a leading figure on this kind of property. As an example, if you'd like to invest in flats, you should know about legislation, safety requirements and have a good idea of what being an owner means. If you're pondering investing in an office building, you must understand what a company wishes.

When trying to get your golfing ball out of a sticky situation like a sand trap, don?t speedily glance at the ball after you hit it to see where it is going. It is essential that your head stays still while you complete your swing in order to be better.

When thinking about buying rental real-estate, take into account that if you invest in rentals near a local college your tenants will likely be scholars. If this is appealing to you remember to write leases which include definitive rules about parties and additional lodgers. Also be advised that your tenants may not be long term, and vacancies in rental units will rise in the summer.

Learn how to be flexible in your hunt for good commercial real estate deals. Look through many sources to find what you need like online classified adverts and hire bird dogs to help you spot the neatest deals. Bird dogs are very good finding you correct deals. Make sure to hang about for the deal that's good for you.

As you consider a commercial investment property for your portfolio, you need to explore all probabilities by completing an in-depth breakdown of whether the property is income producing or non-income making. Income-producing properties would include retail sites, hostels, or warehouses. Understand the various methods that these possible renters could generate and sustain money flow and profit on your investment.

As you may be able to see, there's a lot more to buying commercial real-estate than most people think. It requires research and commonsense, but it'll be worth it, in the end, to get the commercial property you want. By following the above tips, you are well on your way to buying your perfect commercial real-estate.

#AskRioFerdy5 - Fans take to Twitter to quiz Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand

Rio has taken to Twitter to answer questions from fans. What was he asked and how did he answer?

Of the many professional footballers who enjoy using Twitter to interact with their fans on a more personal basis Rio Ferdinand is perhaps the most famous. Sometimes the social networking site has gone a long way toward getting its footballer users into muddy waters when ?Tweeting? the wrong things at the wrong time.

The list of Premier League footballers who have been caught out this way is endless and has led many to believe its continued use is more of a nuisance then it is a benefit. Ferdinand however does use it well and he likes to interact with his fans; even those who perhaps don?t deserve a response with their immature comments.

On Monday night while embroiled in a train journey Rio took the opportunity to allay the monotony (of first class I am sure) of public transport by throwing an impromptu Q&A session online. He answered all the questions with his usual good humour and pinch of salt attitude and we thought we could give you a quick run through of the best on offer from his official Twitter page.

Iran says it, world powers must end nuclear stalemate

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran's foreign minister said on Monday a way must be found to end the deadlock with major powers over its nuclear program, an Iranian news agency reported, but he offered no new initiative on how to achieve this.

Ali Akbar Salehi's comments came ahead of an expected resumption of diplomacy, perhaps next month, aimed at preventing the decade-old nuclear dispute from degenerating into a Middle East war that could damage an already fragile world economy.

Israel, widely believed to be the Middle East's only nuclear-armed power, has threatened military action to prevent its arch-enemy from acquiring nuclear weapons. Iran denies any such goal and says it would hit back hard if attacked.

"The two sides (Iran and world powers) have reached a conclusion that they must exit the current stalemate," Salehi was quoted as saying by the Iranian Students' News Agency.

The West suspects Iran is trying to develop the means to build atomic bombs under the cover of a declared civilian nuclear energy program. The Islamic Republic says it is enriching uranium as fuel for civilian energy, not bombs.

Iran and the six powers - the United States, Russia, France, China, Britain and Germany - have expressed readiness to revive efforts to find a negotiated solution. But Salehi said he did not know when the next meeting would be held.

The powers, known as P5+1, said last week they hoped soon to agree with Iran on when and where to meet. There have been suggestions it could happen already this month, though January now seems more likely, Western officials say.

Analysts and diplomats believe there is a window of opportunity for a new diplomatic initiative with Iran after last month's re-election of U.S. President Barack Obama.

The powers want Iran to scale back its uranium enrichment program and cooperate fully with U.N. nuclear inspectors.

The priority for Iran, a major oil producer, is for the West to lift punitive sanctions increasingly hurting its economy.

Three rounds of negotiations earlier this year - the last one in Moscow in June - failed to achieve a breakthrough.

The big powers have prepared an updated version of package that was rejected by Tehran in the previous talks, Western diplomats say, without giving details.

Their immediate priority is for Iran to halt higher-grade enrichment that could relatively quickly be further processed to bomb-grade material, close the Fordow underground plant where this work is carried out and ship out the stockpile.

SHUTTING FORDOW "NOT ENOUGH"

Iran has hinted at flexibility regarding its enrichment to a fissile concentration of 20 percent, but it wants substantial sanctions easing in return, something the powers say would be premature before Tehran makes significant concessions.

Iran also wants recognition of what it says is its "right" to refine uranium, which can have both civilian and military purposes. "Iran demands its inalienable, legal and legitimate right and wants nothing more," Salehi said.

One Western official said it was too early to say whether the new diplomatic attempt may yield results: "We see that sanctions do have an economic impact on Iran and it is a matter for Iran to really take this offer seriously."

Iran's economic minister was quoted on Sunday saying the country's oil revenues had been cut in half as a result of sanctions.

Another Western diplomat said the powers were increasingly concerned about Iran's expanded enrichment capacity at Fordow, and wanted to address this issue in the new proposal. This could mean, he said, asking Iran to partially dismantle the facility.

"Shutting Fordow is not enough," the diplomat said, adding it would take longer to restart the facility if the enrichment installations had been taken apart.

The world powers hope to gain momentum in dealings with Iran by introducing "confidence-building measures" before approaching a final agreement at a later date, diplomats say.

They say the powers are likely to offer Iran some form of sanctions relief in return but any measures may be limited.

Salehi spoke a few days after the International Atomic Energy Agency and Iran both said progress was made in talks last Thursday on resuming a long-stalled IAEA investigation into suspected atomic bomb research in the country.

A senior Iranian legislator said on Monday that Iran would expect some sanctions relief in return for granting IAEA inspectors access to the disputed Parchin military complex.

The IAEA believes Iran has conducted explosives tests with possible nuclear applications at Parchin, a facility southeast of the Iranian capital, and has repeatedly asked for access.

"They must certainly give some incentive in return, and in my opinion a reasonable and equal incentive would be lifting the sanctions," said Alaeddin Boroujerdi, who chairs the national security and foreign policy committee in the Iranian parliament.

Dropbox 20 launches for iOS with new Photos tab and a streamlined UI

Most of us would call the Dropbox mobile app very utilitarian, built for browsing files and not much else. It's becoming more of a media viewer in its own right with its just-arrived Dropbox 2.0 for iOS users. The cloud storage service gains a dedicated Photos tab that takes advantage of all those automatic uploads from the past few months: the panel organizes photos by the time taken and offers an unintrusive full-screen mode for reliving memories. Hitting the major milestone has also given Dropbox an incentive to rework the interface as a whole, simplifying uploads to specific folders alongside removing the visual clutter. The developer hasn't yet given Android the same treatment, although the company's tendency to keep its major apps on an equal footing suggests it won't be too long before everyone gets a clearer view of their images in the cloud.

[BIR Press Release] TV commercial talent agent ?cast? for tax evasion

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) today filed a criminal complaint with the Department of Justice against BERNARD B. ANACTA (ANACTA) for willful attempt to evade or defeat tax and for deliberate failure to supply correct and accurate information in his Income Tax Return (ITR) for Taxable Year (TY) 2009, in violation of Section 254 and Section 255 of the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997, as amended (Tax Code).

ANACTA is the sole proprietor of MONACO MODELS AND CASTING AGENCY with business address at 11th Floor, Unit 1100 B Vicente Madrigal Building, 6793 Ayala Avenue, Salcedo Village, Makati City. He is engaged in casting artists/models to be featured in television commercials.
The case against ANACTA stemmed from a preliminary investigation conducted by BIR investigators on his alleged perpetration of tax evasion schemes. In the course of said investigation, certifications of income payments were obtained from ANACTA?s clients which documents disclosed he received an aggregate income payment of P7.69 million in TY 2009. Said income payments were likewise confirmed with the Lists of Payors of ANACTA extracted from the BIR?s Data Warehouse.

The said income payments were received from Avon Cosmetics, Inc. (P1.261 million), BBDO Guerrero, Inc. (P0.376 million), Campaigns and Grey, Inc. (P0.183 million), Golden ABC, Inc. (P0.769 million), Golden Arches Development Corporation (P0.296 million), Harrison Communications, Inc. (P0.974 million), McCann Worldgroup Philippines, Inc. (P2.644 million), Publicis JimenezBasic, Inc. (P0.531 million), SM Mart, Inc. (P0.068 million), Southeast Asia Food, Inc. (P0.175 million), United Laboratories, Inc. (P0.349 million), and Universal Robina Corporation (P0.062 million).

Investigation records revealed that ANACTA willfully failed to declare all his income in his ITR for TY 2009. A comparison of the gross income he declared in his ITR for TY 2009 with the revenues he received in the same year as certified by his clients showed that he substantially under-declared his income by 552% or by P6.510 million.

Under Sec. 248 of the Tax Code, an under-declaration of taxable income by more than 30% constitutes a prima facie case of fraud tantamount to tax evasion.

ANACTA was assessed deficiency income taxes for TY 2009 amounting to P4.174 million, inclusive of surcharges and interests.

The case against BERNARD B. ANACTA is the 138th filed under the Run After Tax Evaders (RATE) program of the BIR under the leadership of Commissioner Kim S. Jacinto-Henares. (reytdlc)
