Swelle Review: Fashion and Beauty Apps - The Swelle Life

Net_2

I've been a little slow getting in on the app game despite having an iPad2 for at least two years now;?maybe it's because I pretty much only used the iPad to play Ms. PacMan (which my husband put on knowing that would be my first priority because I'm awesome at it - don't laugh!), and I work from home so I'm on my laptop all day and tend to use websites since that's what's in front of me.?

But it was time I got onto exploring the universe of apps available to us through our devices, it got?embarrassing having to shake my head 'no' when asked if I know this one or that one, then having to explain that I am actually otherwise clued into the online world, I work strictly with digital media for a living! So, when browsing mobile phones on the web?to find out what the current upgrade on my phone looks like, I came across some fashion and beauty apps and decided to put in some time seeing what clever things are out there.?

In terms of shopping, clearly I like Net-a-porter. They are the pioneers of online luxury shopping and became the model to follow in terms of website design and product presentation, and they've also got a fantastic online magazine. So I was curious how all of this web greatness translates on an Android mobile phone, specifically the HTC Sensation which is what I use.?

This is what the homepage of the app looks like (images are screencaps from Net-a-porter's video):

Net_1

The landing page automatically opens on the Shop tab from which you can select 'What's New', browse the designer directory and product categories, or see a curated grouping of products via the 'Trend Edit' option. Or you can select the News tab which appears to be the mobile version of their digital magazine, Edit which features brilliantly shot editorial - you can always shop the shoot directly from the page because, of course, everything featured is from Net-a-porter - as well as interviews and trend stories. And also from the front page is a 'Live' option which is something exclusive to the app, and something that took me a few seconds to figure out. 'Why is it showing me products and telling me that they've been added to so-and-so's shopping bag or wish list?' Ah, ok, this is the social aspect worked in. I probably wouldn't browse this feature again, but I am aware that some others would be interested in being influenced by others' choices and so I can see its relevance in a shopping app (as you probably already know, there are shopping apps and websites based entirely on this principle, one of which is coming up). And I suppose it can bring items to your attention that we may not otherwise come across in the vast yet discerning?sea that is Net's product offering.?

Net_3

Since the primary purpose of the app is shopping, I tried to buy an item (stopping short of the actual purchase, unfortunately!) to see how the selection process and shopping cart function compares to the smoothness of the website. I selected the 'Shoes' category from the homepage which went to the 'Shoes Type' page where you can select the style you want to look at or just go with 'All Shoes' which is what I did. Then I decided I wanted to see what Esquivel shoes they currently have (my favourite) and to do that I returned to the homepage by hitting 'Net-a-porter' in the top left corner of the screen and found the brand in the Designer A-Z page. It gave me four style options, and I clicked on red brogues with a white detail that has a spray-painted effect because they were screaming for my attention. I ran into a few glitches with the images. I got 'image not available' a few times and as I scrolled through was able to see other shots rather randomly. The first three looked low-res whereas the remaining four were crisp. I wondered for a second how you buy the item and tried pulling up a menu from the bottom I hoped was there, and it was. From this menu you can select to view each of the details you get from the product page view on the website. But I couldn't figure out how to add it to the cart. Trying to conjure an 'add' feature with my finger wasn't working, but after staring at the screen for longer than I'd care to admit, I noticed a + button in the top right corner. I hit it and was given the option to add the shoes to the shopping bag or wish list. I selected 'shopping bag' and a list of sizes dropped down. I went for my Esquivel size which is US 7 and then it showed me my selection with the total and a button to confirm the purchase. I didn't do that since I wasn't actually buying them (nuts!) but I'd assume the purchase would have been successful. I should mention that I browsed quite a few other products and didn't find any image problems with those - everything loaded and looked high-res, so I went back to look at the Esquivels again and guess what, all images loaded and were crisp so it was probably that the images hadn't fully loaded although I did give it some time. I put that down to my phone, not the app.?

My overall impression: A smooth and comprehensive app that represents the aesthetic and features of the website well and delivers a similar feel and experience. My one suggestion would be to make the 'add to bag' or 'add to wish list' function more obvious to avoid missing it altogether and abandoning the app in frustration, and ultimately feeling like a dumkopf with no new gear on its way. (Unless this is how all shopping apps work, in which case you can just ignore that last part!)

The Net-a-porter app is free and available for iPad, iPhone and Android in English, French, German and simplified Chinese versions. You can find out more about the app and download it?here?

Pose

Pose is an online and mobile fashion community that has been generating a lot of media buzz and has been called 'The Instagram of Fashion'. There are dozens of sites like it as developers are capitalising on the current hunger for social engagement, fashion show and tells, and the compulsion to buy something right NOW! that looked really hot on a girl who lives in a country that seems so much cooler than your own. Social influence is driving purchasing decisions and the cool kids have it. The developers attract the fashionistas who attract more users who will probably buy something at some point, and they tell their friends about it, and so on.?

So I was curious to see what I might get out of it, if anything. For this one I decided to use the iPad2 since the app is image heavy and it's not available for Android anyway. To begin, I had to create an account. I used my email and then was allowed entry. It told me 'Pose is where fashion happens...and you're about to see why.' Ok! Hmm...now it wants me to take a quiz so they can suggest the best people on Pose for me to follow. Can I bypass this? I instantly resent anything that tries to pigeonhole me - I'm a varied and complex individual! And so are you. Oh well. Here we go. I guess it's just trying to make the sea of fashion more digestible and relevant, although it makes me wonder what I'm not being shown. You can skip questions but at the end it automatically chooses people for you to follow. It gave me four users, incuding Rachel Zoe and Coco Rocha. Something tells me that was not random. Next you can create 'collections' to save 'poses' for inspiration, to buy, or to share with your friends. I hit 'stream' and was brought to a page showing me the poses from people I follow, you know, those four I didn't have a say in following. At this point I am prompted to scroll through images, or 'poses' and encouraged to drag some into my collections. The only thing that stands out is a close-up of a grey t-shirt that says 'F*CK' (but with the U) at which point I'm tempted to create a 'So Subversive' collection just for it. (I don't.) I notice buttons scattered throughout that have a user name and image and they seem to be competing for my attention, so I bite and hit one to see what happens. It brings me to this person's stream and indicates I am now following them. Again, no choice and no prior indication this would happen. This particular Poser has 6646 followers and is following 45 people back. That's not very sociable. At this point I know it's definitely not for me. It hasn't offered anything different from other similar interactive fashion communities I've seen (not that I've seen everything), other than it's the only one that places you exactly where it wants you, rather than let you create your own experience. I'm an adult, I can make my own decisions. But I persevere because this is a review. I hit 'Shop' in the side menu and select a photo of a girl wearing a white outfit. From here I can shop pieces of the outfit and I wind up on the Barneys site looking at a Sophie Hume bag and it's like a breath of fresh air being there. I go back to the outfit page at which point the left menu navigation disappears, I can't figure out how to get off the page and I take that as a sign that I'm allowed to bail.?

My overall impression: If you like looking at style photos of bloggers, celebrities and other fashionistas and don't mind being plunked into an experience that has been quite conspicuously chosen for you, then have a go. You could have fun. One million other people seem to be.?

The Pose app is free and can be downloaded for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad?here

Capture2

The last app I'm reviewing is Bangstyle which I saw on a 'Best Beauty Apps of 2012 list'. I thought it might come in handy for avoiding a repeat of my last salon visit where I tried to describe a very popular colour technique to a colourist who had no clue what I was talking about. (How could she not know what ombre is?!) It's always best to have a photo, you really don't want to assume your stylist knows what you're asking for. (I once wound up with what was essentially a layered bowl cut on top of long hair when I asked for volume. No amount of 'blending' by the salon owner who saw the atrocity and stepped in could salvage it. Don't let this happen to you!)?

Ok, so first you create a profile, which according to the reviews was a prohibitively glitchy process at some point and got the app lots of low ratings. It's not anymore and I was able to sign up quickly. Next I'm taken to the Image Community for Hair page (above left) and have a browse of the styles. There is just one page and when I get to the last one a window pops up telling me it's the last and to go to 'Fresh Pix' to view more. I return to the Image Community and see the Fresh Pix tab at the bottom of the page. The pages do not load quickly which was another gripe users expressed in the reviews. I've waited for at least 10 seconds to be shown a new set of hairstyle photos which seems excruciatingly long for something that's meant to deliver instant gratification. I don't see anything that jumps out so I load more and wait again. It seems lots of users have not tagged their image because I see many labelled 'photo' which I imagine is a default tag. You can share an image or heart it to save it to your inspiration folder within the app which I tried and found easy and straightforward. I decide to look at the Articles tab and surprisingly, I find articles that have absolutely nothing to do with hair! There's one on cameras, an artist who creates illusions using wood, how to bake message into your cakes...then I see the filter for the articles and yes, it covers anything and everything. Is this meant to take the place of glossy magazines in the salon? Instead of being stuck with an old copy of Hello! to thumb through?you read articles on a hairstyle app? Who knows! The My Style feature is where your activity such as saved photos and uploaded pics is organised. There's also a salon locator...still waiting for that to load as I write this... still waiting...I'm glazing over... My phone gave up and went to sleep. After waiting for two minutes I had to quit and start over. I fared no better after a second attempt and now I can't get into anything. Ok! We're back in. Finally. I want to see if I can filter the styles within the Fresh Pix pages so I can look for particular styles I'm interested in. You can't do this on the Image Community page so I'm not sure what the point of it would be unless it features newly added hairstyles? And I'm stuck staring at the swirly circle again. This is a simple app that could be thoroughly checked in just a few minutes so the download time is really frustrating. Ok, at least I'm able to filter styles now, this is where the app becomes useful to me. Or so I thought. I select 'Bangs' and it does nothing. So I try 'Long' and the same thing, nothing. Looking through the list I can see it doesn't have any kind of a colour category which would surely be an essential for people considering a new look? I tried to go back in three more times with no luck. Oh boy. If you were in the salon trying to show a photo from this app you would have one mighty frustrated hairstylist tapping her foot next to you. I bail on it, and I think you know what my final assessment will be.?

My overall impression: Slow loading times and being forced to quit - a third complaint mentioned several times in the reviews - makes it impossible to use this app. What a shame as it may have been useful in the salon. A thorough check of the filter function would hav confirmed that either way.?

The Bangstyle app is free (it would have to be) and is available for iPhone and Android here?if you're still curious.

If you have tried and true suggestions for helpful alternatives please feel free to let us know!?

Eurozone unemployment heading for 20 million

LONDON (AP) ? Unemployment across the 17 EU countries that use the euro is on course to hit 20 million this year, according to figures showing the jobless rate hit another record high ? the latest ignominious landmark for the currency bloc.

Eurostat, the European Union's statistics office, said Friday that the unemployment rate rose to 12.2 percent in April from the previous record of 12.1 percent the month before.

A net 95,000 people joined the ranks of the unemployed, taking the total to 19.38 million. At this pace, unemployment in the currency bloc ? which has a population of about 330 million ? could breach the 20 million mark this year.

The figures, once again, mask big disparities among the euro countries. While over one in four people are unemployed in Greece and Spain, Germany's rate is stable at a low 5.4 percent.

The differences are particularly stark when looking at the rates of youth unemployment. While Germany's youth unemployment stands at a relatively benign 7.5 percent, well over half of people aged 16 to 25 in Greece and Spain are jobless. Italy's rate has ticked up to over 40 percent.

"Youth joblessness at these levels risks permanently entrenched unemployment, lowering the rate of sustainable growth in the future," said Tom Rogers, senior economic adviser at Ernst & Young.

The differences reflect the varying performance of the euro economies ? Greece, for example, is in its sixth year of a savage recession. Germany's economy has until recently been growing at a healthy pace.

As a whole, the eurozone is in its longest recession since the euro was launched in 1999. The six quarters of economic decline is longer even than the recession that followed the financial crisis of 2008, though it's not as deep.

By contrast the U.S. economy has been growing steadily since the end of its recession in 2009 and the jobs market has started to improve, with the unemployment rate falling to 7.5 percent in April.

Though the eurozone is the epicenter of Europe's debt crisis, other countries in the region are struggling to recover as well. Some, like Britain, are also pursuing deficit reduction measures at a time when demand in their main export market ? the eurozone ? is falling. As a result, the wider 27-nation EU, which includes the non-euro countries such as Britain and Poland, has seen unemployment ratchet higher in recent months. In April it was flat at 11 percent.

One of the reasons behind Europe's economic decline is governments' focus on cutting debt aggressively by raising taxes and slashing spending programs. With many governments still pulling back on spending and business and consumer confidence still low, economists do not expect any dramatic recovery to emerge over the coming months.

The sharpest change in unemployment rates among the 17 euro countries was in Cyprus, which saw its jobless rate rise to 15.6 percent from 14.5 percent.

The small Mediterranean island nation became the fifth euro country to seek financial assistance in March. The difference with the other bailouts was that the country was asked to raise a big chunk of its rescue money from bank depositors ? a shock decision that led to a near two-week shutdown of the banks and battered economic confidence.

The European Central Bank has sought to make life easier for Europe's hard-pressed businesses and consumers by cutting its main interest rate to the record low 0.5 percent earlier this month.

Another cut is possible, but most economists say it's unlikely, even though the inflation rate is still under the ECB's target of just below 2 percent.

Eurostat said Friday that inflation in the eurozone rose to 1.4 percent in the year to May from the 38-month low of 1.2 percent recorded in April. It blamed rising food, alcohol and tobacco prices for the uptick.

Analysts said the ECB is more likely to take measures to shore up lending to small and medium-sized businesses, one of the main job creators in Europe. Such companies are currently not taking out many loans for fear the economy might worsen and because banks are charging high rates.

"So far the ECB's actions have not translated into lower lending rates for businesses and households, failing to boost activity," said Anna Zabrodzka, economist at Moody's Analytics.

McCain pictured with Syrian rebel kidnapper

BEIRUT (Reuters) - U.S. Senator John McCain was photographed during a trip to Syria with a man implicated in the kidnapping by Syrian rebels of 11 Lebanese Shi'ite pilgrims a year ago, a Lebanese newspaper said on Thursday.

McCain, a Republican, has been an outspoken advocate for U.S. military aid to the rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad and made a short, highly publicised trip to meet rebel commanders in Syria three days ago.

He has insisted that the United States could locate the "right people" to help among rebel ranks infiltrated with radicalised Islamists.

However, he may have crossed paths with men linked to a group notorious in the region for kidnapping the pilgrims, the Daily Star said.

The paper said that as well as McCain's photographs with rebel commanders, one image showed the face of Mohammad Nour - identified by two freed hostages as the chief spokesman and photographer for the Northern Storm brigade that kidnapped them.

The image demonstrates the difficulty of identifying who the West might want to deal with and could possibly further inflame the delicate sectarian balance in a conflict that is spilling over Lebanon's borders.

A spokesman for McCain said none of the people he met identified themselves as Nour and it had not been his intention to meet anyone of that name.

"A number of the Syrians who greeted Senator McCain upon his arrival in Syria asked to take pictures with him, and as always, the senator complied. If the individual photographed with Senator McCain is in fact Mohammad Nour, that is regrettable," spokesman Brian Rogers said.

"But it would be ludicrous to suggest that the senator in any way condones the kidnapping of Lebanese Shia pilgrims or has any communication with those responsible. Senator McCain condemns such heinous actions in the strongest possible terms."

The hostages were seized in northern Syria as they returned from a pilgrimage in Iran. Lebanese officials flew to Turkey on Thursday in the latest effort to secure the release of the remaining nine hostages.

McCain has denounced Democratic President Barack Obama for shying away from deeper involvement in the conflict. The uprising-turned-civil war has become increasingly bloody and has claimed more than 80,000 in over two years of conflict.

"The senator believes his visit to Syria was critical to supporting the many brave Syrians who are fighting for their lives and the freedom of their country against a brutal regime and its foreign allies that are massacring Syrian citizens on Syrian territory," the spokesman said.

Tesla promises to add charging stations

(AP) ? Electric car maker Tesla Motors Inc. promises to boost the number of fast-charging stations in the U.S. and Canada to make cross-country travel by electric car possible in the next year.

The company said Thursday that by the end of next month, it will triple the number of charging stations it runs from the current eight, and the number will go to around 100 in the coming year, putting stations within reach of almost the entire populations of both countries.

The pace of construction is about twice as fast as the company had previously announced.

The expanded "supercharger" network will allow owners of Tesla's $70,000 Model S sedans to travel from Los Angeles to New York, probably by the coming winter, as well as make other long-distance trips. The Model S can travel about 200 miles, or for about three hours, when fully charged. With the network, it can be recharged to 50 percent of its battery capacity in 20 to 30 minutes, allowing drivers to make quick stops before driving on.

The supercharging stations are about 10 times as faster than most public charging stations, Tesla said on its website.

Currently Tesla has eight supercharger stations in California and on the East Coast. It has plans to add four stations in California this summer. Stations also will be added during the summer so drivers can go from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Seattle and Portland; and from Austin, Texas, to Dallas. They also will come on-line quickly in Illinois and Colorado.

In addition, the company intends to add four stations this summer in the densely populated Eastern Seaboard, where it currently has two.

Elon Musk, who leads the company, said Thursday that the stations will always be free for owners of the large-battery version of the Model S. Owners of the brand's smaller-battery version will have to pay for the option of using the stations.

Musk said most of Tesla's customers don't know about the supercharger stations, and they won't have much of an impact on the company's current sales rate of around 20,000 per year. But they are necessary to appeal to a wider group of more mainstream customers who want to travel between states.

"They want to know that they have that ability to do so, and on a moment's notice, to go wherever they want," Musk said. "I think it's really important for accessing a broader audience."

Tesla said by fall, it should have charging stations in most metro areas, with coast-to-coast travel available during the winter along Interstate 80. By 2014, the company expects to have charging stations within reach of 80 percent of people in the U.S. and Canada, and 98 percent by 2015, it said in the statement.

Tesla said new technology is being tested now that will allow its cars to be fully recharged in about 20 minutes. The technology will be available at stations this summer, the company said.

Day Trading Stocks Online | Binary Options

Author Name:

Day trading is popular in stocks and bonds. A lot of people want to know whether they have to day trade in Forex also. Trading Forex like day trading in equity markets is prevalent but a lot of people prefer not to. This is mostly because day trading forex would involve sitting in front of the computer terminal all day long and the forex market operates 24 x 7. The other concept is to trade in the forex market on end-of-the day basis, a concept in which Mr. Bill Poulos has a long and thorough experience. He is a past master in forex trading business. His forex profit accelerator course provides an excellent insight into trading in the forex market.

Trading on end-of-the day basis has the same potential of instant profits as day trading but needs less time and is less stressful. Many rules that apply to day trading do not apply to end-of-the day trading and you need to look for a program designed specifically for this type of trading.

Day trading in Forex requires you to take instant decisions and there are time pressures on all activity including order entry, placement of stop losses to meet targets of instant profits. Day trading can be very stressful indeed. At the same time those who are new to the forex market should be aware that if they cannot make profits by trading Forex on end-of-the day basis they would hardly fare better in day trading.

By studying the charts of six major currency pairs you will be able to recognize the trends and the potential of instant profits in the short term as revealed by the chart. The reality is that day traders make fast but small profits and that too after a lot of stress. End-of-the day traders, on the other hand, can take home larger profits and that too without stress as patience is the basic mantra of this strategy.

Day trading Forex is not the only way of making instant profits in the forex market. End-of-the day trading yields similar or rather better profits and it requires you to devote very little time, often not more than half an hour daily. To know more about forex before you start trading it would better to refer to the notes and guidelines written by Bill Poulos. His forex profit accelerator course has been designed specifically for beginners. It will do you good to you to know more about it. His course is intended for managing risk in this highly volatile market and to make your profits run.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Does anyone have some good advice for trading stocks online?
I have never traded stocks online but I would like to start. What site is best for trading? How do I pick stocks? Where can I find good fundamental and technical analysis? Are there any sites out there that seem to pick consistent winners?

    • ANSWER:
I can tell that you are a value investor. You want to ask 3 questions for the price of 1... well, here you go.

What site is best for trading?
Every one has different needs. If you're new and don't keep much money in your brokerage account, then Scottrade is probably good for you. They're real time charts are pretty good, but no CD's are available, the cash account only pays about 0.5%, and they charge pretty heavily for mutual funds. If you want to leave money sitting in a MM that pays 5% while you're out of the market, like a choice of no load, no fee mutual funds, has an excellent site for research, want to buy competitive CDs on line, all in one place, then you might like fidelity. It's what makes you happy. If you don't like the sevice, then you can always change.

      How do I pick stocks?
An answer would take volumes to provide, so let me suggest some literature:

I would recommend William O'Neil's "The Successful Investor" as a good starting point. Follow that up with Peter Lynch's "Beating the Street". That should provide you with two strategies that you can learn from in building your own investment strategy.

Other good books include "The Motley Fool Investment Guide" by Tom and Dave Gardner or "Real Money" by James Cramer.

I have read all these books and many others and devised a strategy that adopts a bit from each one.

Another thing you can do is invest using a fictional portfolio. Let that run for a few months to see if you are ready to start trading with real money. In the meantime, invest in mutual funds. Once you are ready, sell the fund and invest on your own.

Remember, the time spend learning about investing is far less then the money lost by not being prepared.

Where can I find good fundamental and technical analysis?
You're on your own for this. There's a multitude of excellent sites out there, where you can get fundamental ratios. Try Zack's, Yahoo Finance, MSN finance, and a multitude of others are out there for free. As far as technical analysis, you need to research and find what works for you. As far as charting goes, Bigcharts is a good free site. Personally, I like Telecharts, which has a fee, but well worth the 50-75cents per day for the sorting capability, fast way to cycle thru many charts, and the ability to write your own personal critera.

Are there any sites out there that seem to pick consistent winners?
No. And anybody that says they can is a liar.

  2. QUESTION:
Hod do you learn to become a day trader? Can you really make alot of money trading stocks?
Is it possible to trade stocks online and make an obsene amount of money as a day trader? How do you learn to do this? How much does it cost?

    • ANSWER:
Go try Forex, it's the biggest market in the world traded by about all countries. Search google for more information. It's also unknown to most because it started in the 1970s and gained public on 1990 or something like that. Most brokerages has demo accounts where you can actually practice. Anyway....follow these rules and you should be fine.

      1. Have descent trading system...Simpler the better.
      2. Risk 1-3% of your account for each trade..

      3. Money management.
      4. Money management.
      5. Money management
      6. Money management.
      7. Money management.
      8. Money management.
      9. Money management.
      10. Money management.

The reason people fail because they don't follow these simple rules and are toooo greedy. Like myself :P but I'll be sure to come back and follow.

  3. QUESTION:
How much money should a beginner start out with before investing online?
I want to invest in stock online. How much money should I start out with? How many different stocks should I buy? Whats the best online trader? Is day trading difficult to do? Thanks

    • ANSWER:
Your best bet is to get some education and experience before you start putting your hard-earned money on the line. Read a book (Investing for Dummies is a good starting point) or take a course to learn how the markets work, how brokers work, what types of investments you can buy etc. Find a website that will let you create a free "practice account". This is basically "pretend" investing where you enter buy and sell transactions of real stocks but you don't actually own them. You can see how your "investments" react over time and whether you made or lost money and then learn from your successes and failures.

As for how many different stocks you should buy, there's no rule and it's completely up to you but a good piece of advice is to spread your risk around so that your money is not tied up in the fortunes of just one company. The best way to do this is with mutual funds and ETFs. Mutual funds look like stock in that you buy shares at a particular price and then it either goes up or down and you make or lose money based on that. The difference between mutual funds and regular stock is that a mutual fund owns stock in many different companies, so when you buy mutual fund shares you're actually buying shares in lots of different companies rather than just one. ETFs, or Exchange Traded Funds, are the same idea except that they are usually tied to an index or a commodity. For example, you could buy an ETF that is tied to the movement of S&P 500 index or one that is tied to the price of oil or natural gas futures contracts.

Whatever you decide to do, don't ever invest more money than you can comfortably afford to lose. And don't be in a rush to sink your money into something you don't really understand. Learn as much as you can first, get some practice experience and seek out the advice of professionals or people you trust who have some investment experience before stepping onto the investing roller coaster. I rushed in when I had some extra cash sitting around and I promptly turned ,000 into about 00 by not knowing what I was doing and making rash, emotional decisions. I've learned a lot along the way and my investments are slowly recovering, but I sure wish I hadn't gotten my education the hard way! lol

      Good luck!

  4. QUESTION:
Who buys your stock when you sell in a day trade?
In day trading, when you sell your stock ownership using an online broker, does the broker sell this shares back to the company or it looks for buyers in the market?

If the broker only sells to buyers, then is it not possible to sell shares back to the company? Thanks for your inputs in advance.

    • ANSWER:
When a stock is traded on an exchange or in the OTC market, the issuing company in never involved in the transaction.

The market is very fluid, that is, there are always buyers and sellers, or there are always individuals bidding and offering the same stock,

Firms very seldom buy back their shares in the active market, most of there trades are handled by prime brokers or buy the floor or market makers/specialist rather than go the retail type of order executions

It doesn't matter whether you use an on-line broker or a full service broker, it doesn't matter whether you buy/sell as an investor or as a day trader, the orders to buy and/or sell are all routed to the same place, and the person on the other side of your trade couldn't care less what type of investor/trader you are.

  5. QUESTION:
Best online stock broker for day trading?
I've been doing a lot of research and I think I'm ready to begin day trading. What is the best online stock broker for day trading? I'd be making a ton of transactions and would need minimal to no processing times for my orders. Can anybody help?

    Thanks.

The Simplest Flashlight Is Just a Rolled Up Piece of Paper

A flashlight is a crucial thing to have around the house, but even though it can be super useful, it's probably plastic and/or filled with DD batteries. Not exactly elegant. The Paper LED Torch Light on the other hand, is the picture of simplicity.

Designed by Kazuhiro Yamanaka, the Paper LED Torch Light is as simple as it seems. There's a single LED mounted on the inside, and when the paper is curved into a tube, two hidden switches turn it on. When the paper lies flat again, it goes off. It's not the first paper-light design we've ever seen, but it's definitely the most wonderfully simple.

As neat as it is, the Paper LED Torch Light doesn't seem to be on sale anywhere. But let's face facts; it probably wouldn't be a very good flashlight. Still, it's a pretty neat trick. And if you ever needed a flashlight that could hide, you'd be hard-pressed to find something better. [Designboom]

Spaghetti wiht Parsley/Cilantro Pesto ? Fit, Fun & Delish! A food blog ...

Our trip to the beach in Mexico was exactly what my hubby and I needed. We relaxed like we haven?t done in years! We literally did nothing! Except for the time we went to El?Malecon to eat at a restaurant one afternoon and buy some seafood (to bring back to the US), we pretty much stayed at the resort the entire time. We loved getting up in the morning to the sound of the waves and the feel of a light cool breeze coming thru the windows. Nothing beats drinking your first cup of coffee on a balcony looking out at the ocean!

Our condo at the Sonoran Sea?was just a few steps away from the ocean and it was great to just walk out the room, walk the pool area and then there you are!?.warm sand in your toes! The water was perfectly cool according to Mr. Delish. I would?ve liked it a tad warmer but don?t listen to me since I really like my water hot even when I take showers on a hot summer day. We practically had the beach to ourselves?.score! ?I think everyone was waiting to come the following Memorial Day weekend. ?We?re definitely going back to the same place.

I haven?t gotten sick in probably 6 years and unfortunately I did get a cold while I was there:(?Mr. Delish also got some bad sunburn, but those things didn?t stop us from enjoying every moment of our mini-vacation:)

I think I?m obsessing too much lately with cooking since my reading material for our trip was food magazines! The one I enjoyed the most was Bon Appetite. There are so many good recipes in their Summer edition that I couldn?t wait to get back in the kitchen as soon as I got home. First one up is Spaghetti with Parsley Pesto. ?So here is my version of it. The pesto is a mix of parsley and cilantro because I just love cilantro too much and couldn?t leave it out. The combination was actually perfect! The hints of citrus flavor from the cilantro mix very well with the simplicity of the parsley?s flavor.

You can make your pesto with whatever combination you would like; parsley, basil & cilantro. Try it!

Ocean not all that separates US, European fans

Imagine Derek Jeter leading the New York Yankees off the field because opposing fans were yelling racial slurs and throwing bananas at his team. Or a game between the Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls halted because of unrelenting race-baiting from the crowd.

It's almost unfathomable to a U.S. sports fan, even with the country's long, wrenching and seemingly endless struggle to achieve equality. Yet scenes like that play out at European soccer stadiums with alarming frequency, the product of a toxic mix of culture, ideology, geographical proximity, economics and alcohol.

"It's an interesting contrast," said Orin Starn, chair of the cultural anthropology department at Duke University. "America had to go through the civil rights movement, and we went through a national crash-course in race relations and racial sensitivity ? to the point in public culture that we're painfully correct. It's really different in Europe. Europe has not gone through the same kind of process of public debate and painful reckoning with questions of race and difference."

Two weeks after a match between Roma and AC Milan in Italy's top soccer league had to be halted for almost two minutes because of racial abuse by fans, European soccer's governing body will ask its 53 members on Friday to adopt a series of sanctions aimed at curtailing racism. One of the proposals UEFA will consider would force clubs to close sections of seats after racial abuse by fans, escalating to a complete shutdown for additional incidents.

At FIFA's annual congress, May 30 and 31 in Mauritius, the world governing body will consider throwing teams out of competitions, or even relegating them ? forcing them into a lower division ? if their players, officials or fans are found guilty of any form of discrimination.

"If UEFA were to do something like ban viewers or really clamp down on them, it might work to some degree," said Andrei S. Markovits, a sociology professor at the University of Michigan and expert on sports culture in the United States and Europe. "But this is not a state issue. It's what we call a civil society issue."

Despite the publicity they get, the incidents of racial intolerance occur only sporadically. But they are ugly when they do. They're not limited to soccer, either. Spanish golfer Sergio Garcia apologized again Wednesday for saying he would "serve fried chicken" if he'd have dinner with Tiger Woods.

But soccer is the common language throughout much of the world. And while Americans are passionate about their sports ? how else to explain kids camping outside Cameron Indoor Stadium for weeks just to get Duke tickets? ? there are fundamental differences in how fans in Europe and elsewhere and the United States come by their loyalties. That helps explain why bigotry can exist so publicly in one place and not the other.

In Europe and other parts of the world, teams often were originally affiliated with a religion or political party rather than a city, said Markovits, who examined the issue in a 2011 article in the Harvard International Review, "Sports Fans Across Borders: America from Venus, Europe from Mars." So when rivals face each other, it's as much a triumph of an ideology as it is the final score.

"When Barcelona plays Real Madrid, this is the Spanish civil war. It's not a soccer game," Markovits said. "This is not Lakers-Celtics, Yankees-Red Sox, Giants-Dodgers, the most pedigreed of American rivalry games. They hate each other, but it's about sports. It's not about you don't have the correct political view."

Added ESPN soccer analyst Alexi Lalas, who played two seasons at Padova in Italy's Serie A, "This is where it's difficult sometimes for American sports fans to understand fandom of other countries when it comes to soccer: What is the underlying part of many of these fan groups is politics, cultural differences and long-held beliefs within these organizations that have absolutely nothing to do with the actual kicking of the ball.

"This is a visual display sometimes of their ideology, their beliefs when it comes to, not soccer, but their country."

The passion Americans have for their teams tends to be diluted, too. While Europeans or South Americans have one club and one country they root for, an American will have a favorite baseball team. A favorite pro football team. A favorite college football team. A favorite college basketball team. And on and on.

If one of those teams is struggling, it's disappointing, Markovits said. But not as devastating as it might be for, say, an Arsenal supporter, who has invested all of his or her energy into the Gunners.

"We have three or four entities to which we attach emotional capital," he said.

Sports in the United States also have become more "event" than game.

The best tickets are now held by corporations and high rollers, few of whom have the same passion as lifelong fans whose loyalty stretches back two, three and even four generations. There also is a relationship between social class and moments of racism, said Rick Eckstein, a sociology professor at Villanova. The higher the social class, the more subtle the expressions of racism tend to be, he said.

In an effort to expand their brand, teams and leagues in the U.S. also have made a concerted effort to make their games more family friendly, said Larry DeGaris, a marketing professor at the University of Indianapolis. Warm-and-fuzzy mascots give away T-shirts during timeouts, and popular music blares from the P.A.

"That's only beginning to happen in Europe, where soccer attendees tend to skew male and younger relative to U.S. sports," DeGaris said.

And, of course, the United States has a history of diversity that the rest of the world does not. Almost everyone in the United States can trace his or her roots to another country while many European countries, in particular, are still struggling with the idea of multiculturalism.

"It could be that we're more mixed here because our country is made up of all types of different people," said Tab Ramos, the star U.S. midfielder who played five seasons in Spain.

Indeed, most of the countries where racial abuse has been most rampant ? Italy, the Netherlands, Eastern Europe ? are countries where immigration is a central and deeply divisive issue.

"Players of color become all the more a lightning rod for controversy and hatred," Starn said.

This isn't to say American sports fans ? or Americans in general ? can congratulate themselves on being enlightened.

Jason Collins is the only active openly gay male player in any of the four major American professional sports, and the veteran NBA center only came out last month. Brittney Griner has said her coach at Baylor encouraged her not to discuss her sexual orientation. San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver said during Super Bowl week he wouldn't welcome a gay player on his team, and homophobic language doesn't yet have the charge of racial slurs.

"We have not confronted the gender demons and the sexual orientation demons in our sports culture quite as up front as we have with race," Eckstein said.

And, Starn said, just because American fans aren't shouting slurs does not make them better than people in Europe or elsewhere.

"There is a certain smugness among Americans around race and now, I would say, gay and lesbian issues," Starn said. "But these problems have not gone away. We still live in an America that's racially divided by neighborhood and friendship and marriages. And we still live in an America where negative attitudes of gay and lesbians are pretty widespread.

"Just because you don't hear racist chants is not a sign that America has achieved some nirvana of racial equality and tolerance."

New Cave-Dwelling Scorpion Species Discovered

Two new species of short-tailed whip scorpions have been found living deep inside the cool, humid caves of northeastern Brazil, a study reports.

Whip scorpions are not true scorpions, but rather part of a group of arachnids that don't have stings and are not poisonous. They possess a whip-like tail, but look more like ants.

Previously, scientists thought whip scorpions came predominantly from the Caribbean. The new species, Rowlandius ubajara?and?Rowlandius potiguara, are some of the first from South America. [Creepy, Crawly & Incredible: Photos of Spiders]

The newly discovered creatures are the same size and same reddish-brown color as other whip scorpions. "You can only tell the species apart by looking at their genitals," said lead study author Adalberto Santos, an arachnologist from the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil.

Twenty-five living specimens of R. potiguar were found in 20 caves of the Apodi Limestone Group in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Males of this species vary widely in the length of their second pair of legs, known as "pedipalps," which are used for mating and fighting. This variation might reflect different strategies used by males of different sizes, Santos said. Bigger males with larger pedipalps might fight rival males for females, whereas smaller males may avoid fighting altogether and simply try to mate with females when bigger males aren't around.

"It's better to be a bigger and stronger male, but not everyone can be a bigger male," Santos said.

Specimens of R. ubajara?were only found in the Ubajara Cave in the state of Cear?. This species did not show the dramatic variation in pedipalp length that R. potiguar males did.

Researchers found both new species of whip scorpion in caves where bats resided. These arachnids probably eat springtails and other small insects that come to feed on bat guano.

Although the first specimens were found in caves, the new whip scorpions may not be exclusively adapted for life in the dark. Both species lack eyes, but this usually happens in short-tailed whip scorpions because they don't need visual information to survive. "The animals look exactly the same as animals that live outside caves," Santos said.

Still, most of these new insects have been found in caves, which are threatened by Brazilian mining activities. "Mining companies are allowed to explore and destroy caves," Santos said, adding, "We have to explore our caves and cave habitats" and find species before they are destroyed.

The findings were reported today (May 22) in the journal PLOS ONE.

(AP) ? Pakistani cricket star-turned politician Imran Khan left the hospital Wednesday, more than two weeks after he suffered serious back injuries in a fall from a forklift at a campaign event, a spokesman said.

Khan will remain at his home in the eastern city of Lahore for a while so that doctors can monitor his progress, said the spokesman for the cricketer's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, Naeemul Haq.

"Thank God, Imran can walk," said Haq. "He is now at his home after being discharged from the hospital."

Khan fractured three vertebrae and a rib when he fell 4.5 meters (15 feet) off a forklift that was raising him to a stage at a campaign event in Lahore on May 7.

The accident, which was broadcast on TV, largely knocked Khan out of the final days of campaigning ahead of national elections, held on May 11. But he later delivered video messages to his supporters from his hospital bed.

Khan, who is revered in Pakistan for leading the national team that won the 1992 cricket World Cup, led an election campaign that energized the country's youth. He criticized traditional politicians as corrupt and declared it was time for "change" in Pakistan.

The Pakistan Muslim League-N party, led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, was able to weather the challenge by Khan in the election. Sharif's party scored a resounding victory, winning close to a majority of the 272 directly-elected national assembly seats, and is expected to form the next government.

Khan's party fell short of its prediction that it would sweep the election, but still did very well, compared to its past performance. It won at least 28 national assembly seats, compared to only one seat won in the 2002 election.

Carney to Europe: Learn from Japan the dangers of half measures

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Europe could face a decade of stagnation unless it makes big reforms and should heed the lessons of Japan, Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney said on Tuesday as he highlighted Japan's bold moves to bolster growth.

In his final speech as Canadian central bank chief before taking over the Bank of England on July 1, Carney noted that Europe's recessionary economy is being held back by fiscal austerity, low confidence and tight credit conditions.

"Deep challenges persist in its financial system. Without sustained and significant reforms, a decade of stagnation threatens," Carney said in the prepared text of a speech he was delivering in Montreal.

"Europe can draw lessons from Japan on the dangers of half measures," he said, adding that Tokyo had now embarked on "a bold policy experiment."

Carney is also the chairman of the Financial Stability Board, the task force on financial regulation of the Group of 20 (G20) leading economies.

Carney, who steps down as Bank of Canada governor on June 1, made no specific reference to the British economy or Bank of England monetary policy.

On Canadian monetary policy, he broke no new ground, saying only that the Bank of Canada has maintained a rate-hike bias for the past year in part to complement the efforts of the government and the bank regulator to curb household debt.

NASA?s BARREL mission launches 20 balloons

May 21, 2013 ? In Antarctica in January, 2013 -- the summer at the South Pole -- scientists released 20 balloons, each eight stories tall, into the air to help answer an enduring space weather question: when the giant radiation belts surrounding Earth lose material, where do the extra particles actually go?

The NASA-funded mission is called BARREL for Balloon Array for Radiation-belt Relativistic Electron Losses and is led by physicist Robyn Millan of Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. During this month of bright, sunny days, the BARREL team launched a balloon every day or two into the circumpolar winds that circulate around the pole.

Each balloon floated for anywhere from three to 40 days, measuring X-rays produced by fast-moving electrons high up in the atmosphere. BARREL works hand in hand with another NASA mission called the Van Allen Probes, which travels directly through the Van Allen radiation belts. The belts wax and wane over time in response to incoming energy and material from the sun, sometimes intensifying the radiation through which satellites orbiting Earth must travel. Scientists need to understand this process better, and even provide forecasts of such space weather, in order to protect our spacecraft.

As the Van Allen Probes were observing what was happening in the belts, BARREL tracked electrons that precipitated out of the belts and hurtled down Earth's magnetic field lines toward the poles. By comparing data, scientists will be able to track how what's happening in the belts correlates to the loss of particles -- information that can help us understand this mysterious, dynamic region that can impact spacecraft. The BARREL and Van Allen Probes teams work together closely. They zeroed in on three specific dates in January 2013 with interesting geomagnetic activity to research initially, dates in which the data from the two missions overlaps and is particularly abundant.

Having launched balloons in early 2013, the BARREL team is back at home building the next set of payloads. They will launch 20 more balloons sometime in 2014.

Check Out This Solid Video Marketing Advice | MySpareTime.net

One of the newest ways for businesses to effectively market their business is through the use of videos. Given the rapid pace of the modern Internet, it is possible to download content faster than ever before. Use videos to your advantage, and find out more about them in this piece.

Have a screenshot of the website you run in your videos. This lets viewers become a little more familiar with it. How-to videos can also incorporate screenshots. All you have to do is utilize a software program that allows you to edit videos.

Great titles are an excellent addition to already-great media during any online marketing campaign. A title that?s powerful and relevant to the video will draw people to it. A really good title can help to draw curious viewers in. You should make the titles of your videos eyecatching.

Video marketing is characterized by the short period in which you must grab the attention of viewers. The first 10 to 15 seconds of each video should be the strongest. Teasers and other attention getters work great here.

Don?t overlook YouTube. You should start all of your video marketing efforts on this site. You get free video hosting. They also are visited the third most out of every website there is. This is the second most trafficked online search engine, not to mention the best-loved video site.

If your customers have a hard time using your product, make a video explaining how to do so. On one hand, you will have cleared up any problems and potential customer service issues. On the other hand, you will present a strong and favorable image of your company that is sure to appeal to potential customers.

Your content must be engaging. Provide only content that is relevant, valuable and entertaining or informative. You may be able to boost your views with a video hosting site, but it won?t really work out if you have boring videos. Viewers expect videos that are interesting and helpful, not boring advertising. The surest way to build a subscriber base quickly is to make interesting videos.

Talk to your colleagues and seek their assistance in helping your video marketing ideas. You need to have articulate people who represent the business. Having a variety of people in your videos can make them more interesting.

You have to consistently post fresh content in order for visitors to keep returning. Boring content does nothing except repel viewers, and that is not good for business. Your viewers should be wanting more at the end of each video. If you have really interesting content, more people will want to watch it.

Most individuals appreciate honesty. If you are going to make a video, make a video about something that you are truly interested in or believe in. Stay natural and authentic in order to have more success with your intended client base.

A personal connection with customers can be built through video marketing. Video taping the effort that goes into making your products will give consumers a behind-the-scenes look at your operations that they?ll appreciate. People will like to see that there?s a more personal side to the business you run.

Once you?ve collected data from statistics and comments on your videos, make another video! The data will allow you to make better videos by telling you what content to work on and helping you decide what equipment to use to increase quality.

Be ready to moderate comments to any marketing video that you upload to YouTube. A lot of viewers base their opinions on the comments of others, and seeing lots of negative or offensive comments could be disastrous for your campaign. You can also disable the comments section entirely if you are not able to moderate the feedback.

Don?t just post on YouTube, also include the video on your site, too. That way, more people will see it. This is a great way to expose your video to many different viewers.

Do not fret about perfection. You don?t need state-of-the-art equipment to market with video. Most of the time all you have to do is put some good software on your computer. You can even use your smartphone! As long as you provide information that is valuable, people will watch your videos.

In order to get more videos on your site, think about having a contest. It can be something serious or even something goofy like a dance or joke! Seeing other customers using your product is an excellent way to garner new customers.

Don?t make your videos appear like advertisements. Your viewers can lose interest in videos that are nothing more than sales pitches. You want to give people something that they can use.

You need to include a friendly greeting with each customer engagement. Tell them what you?re about and what your business does first. Also, end your videos with a friendly sign-off, and repeat your name and the name of the business.

Scientists Clone Human Embryos To Make Stem Cells

... just as much of a person as an embryo is.

So if one has any sort of ethical dilemma with harvesting stem cells from embryos under the notion that such willful destruction of embryos is equivalent to premeditated homicide, this particular technique shouldn't make those people breathe any easier, and in fact, may be cause for them to scream even more outrage at the notion that, to use words they might throw around, "they are creating even more people to deliberately murder".

Well, biologically, yes, a clone could be identical to an embryo, but biological definitions aren't the issue, are they? Leadership Institute Participants Announced | The Wildlife Society ...

On 13 May, TWS released the list of participants who have been chosen to attend the 2013 TWS Leadership Institute. These promising early-career wildlife professionals, selected from a competitive pool of applicants, will participate in a variety of distance learning projects over the coming summer. The program culminates in October, with intensive hands-on mentoring activities and leadership workshops during the 2013 TWS Annual Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

A committee of TWS members and staff selected participants based on the applicants? academic record, demonstrated leadership capability, and demonstrated level of excellence either in their current position or in their position as a leader of a Chapter or Section of The Wildlife Society.

This year?s participants are:

  • Matt Bahm, Lecturer, Gonzaga University, Washington
  • Sarah Bullock, Wildlife Biologist, Bureau of Land Management, Alaska
  • Amy Carrozzino-Lyon, Research Associate and Instructor, Virginia Tech
  • Sarah Hamer, Assistant Professor, Texas A&M University
  • Agn?s Pelletier, Research Associate, Trent University, Ontario
  • Stephanie Ferrero, Wildlife Biologist, Colorado Parks and Wildlife
  • Rachael Urbanek, Assistant Professor of Wildlife Science, Arkansas Tech University
  • Jonathan Wiens, Habitat Biologist, Government of Manitoba
  • Rachel Williams, Regional Landowner Relations Specialist, Arizona Game and Fish Department
  • Krysten Zummo, Wildlife Technician, SUNY Cobleskill, New York

Many young wildlife professionals entering leadership positions have not necessarily been trained in the skills needed for successful management of large groups or complicated programs. The Leadership Institute introduces these exceptional young people to the management, mentoring, and organizational skills they need to become exceptional leaders.

From May through September, participants will complete a wide variety of exercises, which include reading and reflection on leadership topics, presenting to peer groups, leading seminars, and developing summary documents regarding their professional leadership goals. During TWS? Annual Conference in Milwaukee, the participants will meet for focused analytical discussions, serve as mentors for students, be mentored by Institute alumni and Council members, and attend Council meetings.
