Judge orders man to stay away from Selena Gomez (omg!)

BURBANK, California (AP) ? A civil judge on Friday granted Selena Gomez a three-year restraining order against a man accused of threatening to kill the singer-actress and of traveling from Illinois to try to meet her.

Superior Court Judge William D. Stewart granted the order, which requires Thomas Brodnicki to stay away from the "Wizards of Waverly Place" star and not attempt to contact her.

Another judge dropped a felony stalking charge against the Brodnicki, 46, last year after determining prosecutors hadn't proven he had caused fear in the star. Stewart twice delayed issuing a civil order until Brodnicki had an opportunity to respond.

Gomez, 19, did not appear at Wednesday's hearing. She wrote in a declaration filed in October that she was in extreme fear after learning that Brodnicki had threatened to kill her while he was on a psychiatric hold.

Prosecutors later alleged he stalked the actress between July and October.

Stewart noted that Brodnicki filed a declaration in December essentially consenting to the protective order and that the man with a history of mental illness had received "due process." He said Gomez had reasonable cause to afraid of Brodnicki, who did not attend Friday's hearing.

The order also covers Gomez's family.

Upcoming Google tablet takes aim at Kindle Fire: report

A Google tablet is on the way. But it is aimed at the Kindle Fire or the iPad?

Back in December, Google exec Eric Schmidt announced that Google was close to releasing its own tablet computer ? possibly a tablet branded with the Nexus moniker.?"In the next six months we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality,"?told the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sea,?according?to the UK Telegraph. That announcement meshed well with a long-simmering rumor:?That Google and LG had partnered to build a tablet.?

At the time, the assumption was that Google would be going after the corner of the market currently dominated by the Apple iPad (in other words, high-end). But now DigiTimes, a Taiwanese tech site, is alleging that Google could instead be gunning for the Kindle Fire, the budget tablet released last fall by Amazon.?

Citing anonymous sources from "Google's upstream supply chain," DigiTimes speculated that a Google tablet ? armed with Android 4.0 software ? will hit in either March or April. The price? Less than 200 bucks, so as better to compete with Amazon. (The Kindle Fire retails for $199, meaning, as we noted recently, that Amazon actually loses money on every Kindle Fire it builds.)

So is the scuttlebutt for real? Well, typical caveats apply: Google is remaining mum, and although DigiTimes is well sourced, the site has been wrong before. That said, many tech bloggers seem willing to believe the DigiTimes report, if only because Google ? long a holdout in the tablet game ? seems well-poised to introduce a Kindle Fire (or iPad) competitor.?

Over at PC World, Daniel Ionescu breaks down the possible routes for a Google tablet.?

"The tablet market represents a slightly different challenge for Google than the smartphone market, where Android has already won (in sales)," Ionescu writes. "Google can either pursue Apple?s model to produce high-end tablets, where the biggest profits are, or it could pursue the media tablet market, where Amazon is?taking a loss?on the hardware and hopes to profit from sales from its content ecosystem, including movies, music, books and apps."

Valencia edges Sevilla

updated 7:05 p.m. ET Jan. 5, 2012

BARCELONA, Spain - Jonas scored in the first half to help Valencia beat Sevilla 1-0 on Thursday in the opening leg of a round-of-16 matchup in the Copa del Rey.

Jonas scored in the 33rd minute. The Brazilian forward received a pass, cut back to his right foot, and curled a shot around goalkeeper Andres Palop from the left side of the area.

Valencia and Sevilla are the last Spanish teams to have won domestic titles other than Barcelona and Real Madrid. Valencia won the Copa in 2008 and Sevilla lifted the trophy in 2007 and 2010.

Earlier Thursday, a 10-man Espanyol became the latest top-flight team to lose to a lower-division opponent this week when second-tier Cordoba scored two late goals in a 2-1 comeback win.

Sergio Garcia gave Espanyol the lead in the 38th minute before goalkeeper Kiko Casilla was sent off with a red card for fouling Cordoba striker Jose Diaz in the area.

Substitute goalkeeper Cristian Alvarez blocked Diaz's resulting penalty in the 54th, but he could do little to stop Borja Garcia's long shot in the 81st after it took a friendly deflection off a defender.

Cordoba pressed for the winner, which came 4 minutes later when Carlos Caballero volleyed in a cross.

No more politicians, NH eatery owner says

By Sevil Omer, msnbc.com

A New Hampshire restaurant owner says he is so fed up with the flurry of GOP presidential candidates at his Portsmouth eatery that he put up his own 2012 slogan: "No Politicians, No Exceptions."

For months, politicians, their staff and news media have stormed New Hampshire restaurants during the campaign?for the White House.

Seeing no sign of easing until the Jan. 10 presidential primary, Jermey Colby, owner of Colby's Breakfast & Lunch, said he had to?do something to end the circus inside his small business located near the Massachusetts border.

?There is no forewarning and all of a sudden they come in and we are overrun by cameras and blah, blah and blah,? Colby said. ?We?re trying to run a business here and this whole meet-and-greet and vote for me deal is very distractive and disruptive, not only to our staff but to our customers.

"It?s hard and I find it very rude," he said.

Visits from Texas Governor Rick Perry and former presidential candidate?Michele Bachmann?sealed the deal to slap the sign on the door, he said.

?We just had had enough.?

Washington Marijuana Legalization Initiative Hands in Signatures

New Approach Washington, the organizers of the I-502 marijuana legalization and regulation initiative, last week handed in 350,000 voter signatures to try to qualify for the November ballot. They turned in 341,000 on Thursday and another 10,000 on Friday, the last day to hand them in.

The campaign needs 241,153 valid signatures to qualify for the ballot. With some 350,000 signatures handed in, the campaign has a considerable cushion to account for duplicate and other invalid signatures, meaning it is likely to qualify for the ballot, but it will take state officials several weeks to make that determination.

If the measure meets the valid signature threshold, it then goes before the state legislature. If the legislature doesn't approve it, it then goes before the voters in November.

I-502 would allow Washington adults to possess up to an ounce of marijuana, which would be sold at pot-only stores licensed and regulated by the state Liquor Control Board. Marijuana cultivation for the state stores would also be licensed and regulated by the board. Estimated excise, business, and sales revenues of $215 million a year would be split between the state's general fund and certain earmarked public health and prevention programs.

I-502 would also create a per se DUID standard of five nanograms of THC per milliliter of blood, which has become a contentious issue in the state's marijuana and medical marijuana communities. According to the Associated Press, those divisions were on display Thursday as New Approach Washington members handed in signatures.

The AP reported that about a dozen demonstrators carrying signs reading "Legalize, Don't Penalize" shouted and chanted as the signatures were turned in. "New Approach, telling lies, we don't want your DUIs," the protesters chanted.

The "lies" to which the protestors referred are New Approach Washington's arguments that including the per se DUID language is a pragmatic measure designed to blunt fears of drugged driving among voters, that Washington already has a drugged driving law, and that the measure is unlikely to result in a wave of DUID arrests of medical marijuana patients due to the "probable cause" requirement that a driver demonstrate signs of impairment before a police officer may order a drug test.

The unhappy patients have organized as Patients Against I-502. The initiative is also drawing opposition from the folks at Sensible Washington, who echo the anti-DUID argument and also argue for a measure that would allow for personal home cultivation and with fewer restrictions overall. Sensible Washington tried unsuccessfully for two years to get its initiative on the ballot and failed for lack of funding. New Approach Washington, on the other hand, has managed to garner the support and raise the funds necessary to gather the necessary signatures.

It looks like marijuana legalization is going to be on the ballot in Washington this year. It also looks like Washington won't be alone; a Colorado legalization initiative is well-advanced in its signature gathering phase and appears set to make the ballot when signatures are turned in a few weeks from now. But competing legalization initiatives in California and Oregon don't appear nearly as well positioned to break through the signature ceiling, although that could change if some funding angel appears.

FDA Approves Self-Sanitizing Keyboard

That is exactly what I was thinking. All metals have significant antibacterial properties in pure form due to electron freedom. Stainless steel is similarly naturally antimicrobial.

Since they are using UV, I hope they had the good sense to use a titanium dioxide finish on it as well, since that massively boosts UV efficacy. Actually titanium dioxide has the ability to actually clean small quantities of finger grease and dirt from the surface as well.

The best approach would use a micro spattering of TiO2 (think polka dots smaller than most bacteria) on stainless steel or copper alloys with waterproof keys and construction. Once a month, throw it in the commissary dishwasher to remove dirt and grease which give the little germs homes.

As others have pointed out, the price for this model is ridiculous as well.
