Google clears another step in EU antitrust case

BRUSSELS (AP) ? A spokesman for the European Union's antitrust body says Google has submitted proposals to address concerns that it is dominating the online search and advertising markets.

The European Commission, the 27-nation bloc's executive arm, is investigating whether Google Inc. unfairly favors its own services in its Internet search results.

Google's search engine ? the world's most influential gateway to online information and commerce ? enjoys a near-monopoly in Europe.

Spokesman Antoine Colombani said Monday Google has submitted in legally binding form a list of remedies to address the Commission's concerns. Those will shortly be put to a market test to see whether they will be sufficient.

The Commission will make a final decision on the case ? launched in 2010 ? sometime after learning the market test's results.

Arsenal rallies to beat Norwich 3-1 in EPL

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:50 a.m. ET April 13, 2013

LONDON (AP) -Arsenal scored three late goals to earn a comeback 3-1 win over Norwich on Saturday and climb into third place in the Premier League.

Michael Turner had given Norwich a surprising lead against an inefficient Arsenal when he was left wide open to head in a free kick in the 57th minute. But Arsenal equalized with a disputed penalty in the 85th after Kei Kamara was adjudged to have tugged on Olivier Giroud's shirt as they tussled for a ball in the area.

Mikel Arteta buried the spot kick in the top right corner and the Gunners then went ahead when ahead three minutes later when Sebastien Bassong turned a cross into his own net. Lukas Podolski put the game away in injury time, receiving the ball on the edge of the area and slotting a shot inside the near post.

Arsenal is now one point ahead of both Chelsea and Tottenham in the fight for Champions League places, although Chelsea has a game in hand. The Gunners host sixth-place Everton, which is a further three points back, on Tuesday.

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere returned from an ankle injury while fellow England international Theo Walcott was on the bench after his own layoff. Captain Thomas Vermaelen, who has been benched by manager Arsene Wenger lately, returned to the defense in place of suspended Per Mertesacker.

Arsenal controlled possession for much of the first half but struggled to create any clear-cut chances, with Gervinho failing to make the most of two opportunities and Giroud hitting the crossbar with a glancing header.

Instead, Norwich went ahead after the break when Kieran Gibbs tripped Kamara on the right edge of the penalty area and Snodgrass floated the free kick towards the back post, where Turner rose unmarked to power a header into the bottom left corner.

Wenger responded by bringing on Walcott and Podolski, and the German nearly equalized when he drilled a volley from six yards but Mark Bunn got just enough on the ball to tip it up onto the crossbar.

More international support needed for Jordan to cope with Syrian refugees, says UN development chief

Greater international support is needed for countries currently absorbing increasing waves of refugees fleeing Syria, including Jordan.

Amman, Jordan (PRWEB) April 11, 2013

Greater international support is needed for countries currently absorbing increasing waves of refugees fleeing Syria, including Jordan, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark said yesterday as she wrapped up a four day visit to Jordan.

The deterioration of the security and humanitarian situation in Syria has forced thousands of Syrians to flee and seek refuge in neighbouring countries, with Jordan alone currently hosting nearly half a million internationally displaced persons (IDPs) from Syria, according to news reports.

?Jordan is suffering a crisis clearly caused by the spillover of the very tragic events in Syria,? said Helen Clark, who met with HM Queen Rania and a range of Jordan senior officials, women leaders, activists, donors and the UN Country Team there. ?As the international community addresses the significant needs of the refugees, I think it is important that Jordan?s particular circumstances are also taken into account.?

More than 1.3 million Syrian refugees have crossed borders into Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey since conflict erupted. The number could exceed four million by the end of the year, the UN Refugee Agency announced this week. Since the beginning of the year, 1,500 to 2,000 Syrians have been pouring into Jordan daily.

?The refugee flow is very, very significant and we acknowledge not only Jordan?s generosity in keeping its border open but also the considerable strain on its host communities for jobs, energy, water, health and education services,? Helen Clark said.

This large influx of refugees into Jordan is putting a considerable burden on local Jordanian host communities, and their social and economic services.

?As some agencies like UNHCR and UNICEF focus on the Syrian refugees, others, including UNDP, are looking at how we can help alleviate pressure on the host communities who are under strain as well,? Helen Clark said. ?This is a crisis that is not only affecting Syria but clearly its neighbours too.?

During her visit, Helen Clark met with Jordan?s Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour to discuss how UNDP can support these host communities in Jordan and increase their ability to not only absorb the influx of refugees but also to mitigate any possible tensions between the refugees and the host communities through support to basic social services and job creation for Jordanian youth.

The Prime Minister also briefed Helen Clark on the proposed reform programme and potential UNDP support.

?This is a very substantial reform programme,? said Helen Clark. ?Should this programme be approved, we are there for Jordan across the wide range of areas UNDP works in, including governance and political development reform, decentralization and poverty reduction.?

Helen Clark was in Jordan to attend the Arab Development Forum and a key UNDP regional meeting of its country-level offices in the Arab States.

Gold Getting Hammered Again! Watch $1,470 ... - Yahoo! Finance

Gold is breaking below long term support in early trading, continuing to erode the bedrock of the idea that the yellow metal is a way to hedge against the vicissitudes of capital markets. When stocks rise, as they have all year, gold moves lower. Unfortunately for gold bugs the reverse hasn't been true of late. When stocks have been weak, gold has failed right along with it.

Jon Najarian, co-founder of OptionMonster.com, says gold's weakness is part of a growing body of evidence that the yellow metal isn't necessarily the alternative currency of choice. "Bitcoin is a sign and a symptom of what's wrong, but unfortunately gold is not the cure," he says in the attached video. "Gold is not the beneficiary of all that fear."

In other words, gold is just another slip of paper being bought and sold on the whims and urges of the crowds. Of course that doesn't mean gold can't be traded, just that it's time to consider it from a trading perspective rather than a storage place of wealth.

As a trader Najarian is playing gold on the long side by selling puts on downdrafts, such as the one being seen in early trading Friday. He's using $1,470 strikes. That means Najarian could be forced to buy gold lower, forcing him to "own that asset at the worst possible time."

If gold breaks current levels and can't hold $1,470, it's got a long way to fall as far as the Option Monster is concerned. He doesn't see additional support until $1,340 and isn't going to hang around until it gets there if the first line of support doesn't hold.

As always, such price targets will be irrelevant if and when the global currency system collapses and the yellow metal finally becomes the only real currency in the world. Should that be the case, gold will presumably move much higher.

For more from Najarian, check out details of The Street Monster investment conference coming this June.

Why Employees Sue: 6 Lessons from the Ultimate Insider - Business ...

First impressions are important. But when it comes to preventing employment lawsuits, it?s typically the last impression that employees have at work that matters most.

?This is why 90% of people come to our office. It?s the way they?re treated on the way out the door,? said noted plaintiffs' attorney, Randy Freking, of Freking & Betz in Cincinnati, during last week's Labor & Employment Law Advanced Practices (LEAP) Symposium in Las Vegas, hosted by Business Management Daily and The HR Specialist.

Terminations are the biggest flashpoint for employment lawsuits, and it?s where supervisors and HR professionals seem to make the most mistakes?in both style and substance.?

Freking advises employers to ?treat people as you expect to be treated? during terminations. One example: escorting employees off the premises, a practice he sees as unnecessary in most cases and will only trigger resentment and litigation. (It may be necessary ...(register to read more)

Retro console mod combines 15 game systems into a single ...

Gaming hardware modder Bacteria has created the ultimate retro console mod, combining 15 systems into one machine that can be operated with a single controller. The system houses a host of older consoles including the Atari 7800, as well as multiple Sega and Nintendo generations including the Dreamcast and Gamecube. With emulation and backward compatibility built into some of the systems, the project is capable of playing a total of 18 console's games. Bacteria has aptly titled the bundled console Project Unity.

The project's final hardware is housed in a large wooden box with a label above each of the fifteen disc drives and cartridge slots to indicate which console's media a given drive accepts. The full machine weighs 44 pounds, took three years to make, and cost just over $1,000 in parts (although it's unclear if this includes the cost of the consoles as well). To make a controller work with all 15 systems, Bacteria included 16 buttons, three joysticks, and a D-pad. Though it may be some time before you can purchase a combined console as extensive as Project Unity, accessory maker Hyperkin unveiled a similar, but less ambitious system last month that can accept almost any retro game cartridge that you may want to play.
