Northern lights shine through a magnetic crack

A "crack" in Earth's magnetic field has opened the way for yet another thrilling display of the northern lights near the top of the world.

We're in the middle of an upswing in the sun's 11-year activity cycle, leading up to an expected peak in 2013. If solar storms get too intense, there could be a heightened risk of outages in satellite communication and electrical grids. But fortunately, the only significant effects from the solar outbursts so far have come in the form of heightened auroras, occasionally ranging as far south as Nebraska.

Auroras arise due to the interaction of Earth's magnetosphere with electrically charged particles streaming from the sun. That interaction energizes atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen in the ionosphere, causing ripples of greenish and reddish light between 60 and 200 miles up in Earth's polar regions.

SpaceWeather.com's Tony Phillips reports that the interplanetary magnetic field tipped south this week and opened a crack in our planet's magnetic shield to fuel a minor G1-class geomagnetic storm. The Space Weather Prediction Center said the storm was sparked by particles sent out from the sun during an eruption last Friday.

You can see the atmospheric physics at work in the picture above, captured by Andrei Penescu in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, on Feb. 27. Fittingly, Kangerlussuaq is home to the Sondrestrom Upper Atmospheric Research Facility, a project that studies the aurora and other atmospheric phenomena.

Here are a few other photos from this week's auroral displays, plus two video extras. One is "Temporal Distortion," a time-lapse tribute to the aurora and other wonders of the night sky by Dakotalapse photographer Randy Halverson. It includes some of the auroral imagery we featured back in October, and features original music by Bear McCreary, the award-winning composer for TV shows such as "Walking Dead" and "Battlestar Galactica."

The other is David Peterson's compilation of time-lapse videos captured by astronauts on the International Space Station, including some primo views of the aurora from above. Here's what NASA's Mike Fossum, a former space station resident, had to say about the clip: "This is the best video I've seen from photos we took on ISS! Stunning!!"

Finland's Aaro Kukkohovi saw an aurora of a different color burst forth on Feb. 27 in the skies over Lumijoki. "I've never seen anything close to this," Kukkohovi told SpaceWeather.com. Raise your hand if you expected a blackface controversy at this year's Oscars.

Host Billy Crystal's opening montage featured the bizarre inclusion of his Sammy Davis Jr. character during a "Midnight in Paris" tribute that also featured Justin Bieber. Bieber announced that he was going back in time to hang out with Hemingway -- like the mysterious characters who pick up Owen Wilson's character in "Paris."

"And then we're gonna go kill Hitler," added Crystal-as-Davis, pulling a switchblade.

The moment got a huge laugh. But Davis' inclusion made not a lot of sense since:

1. Davis died two decades ago

2. Davis was a child in the 1920s.

Oh, right, and 3: No one really does blackface anymore. Crystal did it when he played Davis on "Saturday Night Live" in the '80s, but what somehow airs on a late night show nearly three decades ago doesn't necessarily fly during one of the most-watched shows of the year.

Tweeters were fairly unanimous in responding: "Whaaaa?"

"If you had 3 minutes for First Blackface of the Night in your #Oscars pool, congratulations!," tweeted the New York Times' Dave Itzkoff.

"Hey, Billy Crystal in blackface!" opined another tweeter, Morgan Carroll. "Good thing the Oscars went with the safe choice!" (He was referring to Eddie Murphy passing on the hosting gig after Brent Ratner lost the job following comments widely perceived as homophobic.)

A great many others noted that blackface is just never OK, which Crystal should know: Ted Danson received serious criticism when he appeared at a Friars Club roast with Whoopi Goldberg, Crystal's longtime "Comic Relief" co-host, in 1993.?

Adding to the awkwardness of the moment: The montage segued from "Midnight in Paris" to "The Help," a film about black maids persevering during the Jim Crow era. In "The Help" scene, Crystal was seen eating the feces-laced pie Octavia Spencer's character serves up to her racist former employer.

The only person still doing blackface on American television is Chris Lille, on his HBO show "Angry Boys." While he's been criticized for it, he has received nowhere near the attention Danson did because Lille is Australian and presumably underaware of how much blackface offends people in the states. Also, very few people watch "Angry Boys."

I went to Mass yesterday at the Carmel of Maria Regina?a Carmelite convent about ten minutes from home. This was my second visit there in three weeks, and though I don?t see it as a permanent church home for my family it is a quiet, prayerful place that I enjoy visiting.

After Mass, I was walking through the parking lot to my van. As I walked to the driver?s side door, I heard a voice behind me.

?I?m surprised to see you here with those on your bumper.?

He was referring to the three well-worn Obama campaign bumper stickers that have adorned our van for the last two years. This wasn?t the first time I?ve heard a rude comment about them, but it was the first time I heard one in a church parking lot after Mass.

How Christian of you, I thought, but I refused to counter his comment with one just as rude. Instead, I got in the car and started backing out.

The parking lot is quite narrow so it took a few tries to pull out of the spot and straighten up without hitting someone. As I was about to drive off, I glanced over my shoulder. He stood there staring at my bumper stickers, like he could peel them off if he glared at them hard enough.

?What?? I asked, knowing the answer.

?What?? He sounded surprised that I was challenging him.

I paused for a moment, wondering what I?d say next. When I opened my mouth again, I think the Holy Spirit was guiding me.

?God bless you.?

His scowl transformed into a smile. ?God bless you too.?

It?s been over eighteen months, I haven?t thought about it much since then but he had, and as we left church yesterday morning he pulled me aside:

?I don?t know if you remember, but I made a comment a while back about your Obama bumper sticker. Well, I just wanted to apologize.?

We shook hands and chatted for a few minutes. We have very strong, and often differing opinions about many subjects, but on two things we wholeheartedly agree:

1. Those things we hold in common?our shared faith and our shared humanity?are far greater than any of our disagreements.
2. Forgiveness has no expiration date.

All in all, it was an excellent start to a Lenten journey.

Official: Obama to Seek 28 Percent Corp. Tax Rate - Finance - CBN ...

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will unveil a plan Wednesday to cut the corporate tax rate from 35 to 28 percent, which includes 25 percent for manufacturers.

The reduction is part of the plan outlined by President Obama in his State of the Union speech last month, according to a senior administration official.

The plan also seeks to end dozens of loopholes and set a minimum tax on foreign earnings.

"We want to bring down the rate, and we think we can, to a level that's closer to the average of that of our major competitors," Geithner told the House Ways and Means Committee last week.

Some say the proposal would not increase the deficit, but critics contend an overhaul of the corporate tax system is unlikely to pass in an election year.

The current U.S. 35 percent nominal corporate tax rate is the second highest worldwide, after Japan. But deductions, credits, and exemptions allow many corporations to pay taxes at a much lower rate.

Obama's plan would lower the effective rate for manufacturers to 25 percent while promoting development of clean energy systems. The plan, however, is not as ambitious as a House Republican proposal that would lower the corporate rate to 25 percent.

1. The replication technologies used by your Cloud Service Provider may slow down your IT environment.
   Many replication technologies utilize snapshots to make a copies of data, slowing production environments and taking resources from your critical applications and systems. Disaster Recovery, as important as it is, should not hinder your critical business systems.
2. Most Cloud service providers charge for bandwidth utilized to send data to their Cloud, resulting in a costly expense.
   Many replication solutions do not have built-in compression and network optimization tools. Replication without compression can become quite costly, as network costs are often quoted by service providers on a per-GB (gigabyte) basis.
3. Your service provider?s Cloud-based replication site needs to work with your existing storage and technologies.

Currently, Cloud service providers need to offer the same storage and technologies as their customers in order to serve as a replication and recovery site. If you and your Cloud provider are using different storage and technologies, the process of replicating data to their cloud can be costly and involve some complex, manual processes.

What can you do to make sure your company does not fall victim to failures in these key areas?

1. Avoid snapshots and other replication technologies that tax production.
   A disaster recovery solution should be simple, automated and have zero impact on your business systems and applications. Be sure to have an automated mechanism for testing your DR solution as well, so that you can run regular checks of your protected data. Data protection and tests of your DR system should never impact the applications running in your data center.
2. Find a replication solution with built-in bandwidth compression.

Make sure they are set up to do this, otherwise you?ll end up paying for them to upgrade their storage technology to match yours. Plus, if the Cloud provider can only work with one storage vendor, that locks you to a specific vendor in your data center for the full duration of your Cloud contract. Make sure your provider can support any storage vendor, so you have the freedom to upgrade or change vendors in your data center without disrupting your Cloud DR plan.

Disaster Recovery to the Cloud is a big opportunity for SMBs, offering secure, automated, and low-cost data replication and recovery. Simply knowing what to ask your Cloud provider will make the selection of DR services simple and effective.

Whitney Houston being laid to rest at ceremony

WESTFIELD, New Jersey (AP) ? Whitney Houston is being laid to rest at a private ceremony in New Jersey.

Houston died Feb. 11 in California at age 48. No cause of death has been determined.

She is being buried Sunday at the cemetery in Westfield where her father was interred in 2003. Onlookers were gathering along the route to her gravesite as the police-escorted motorcade headed toward it and the hearse carrying her casket entered the cemetery.

The pop star was mourned at a funeral Saturday at the church in Newark where she sang in the choir as a child. The invitation-only service featured a tribute by some of the biggest names in music, including Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys. Kevin Costner and music mogul Clive Davis were among those who spoke.

VANCOUVER ? Living in harsh conditions in an orphanage early in life has long-lasting consequences for a child?s social skills, a new study finds.

Children who spent their first two years in a Romanian orphanage behaved abnormally in social interactions with other children, even years after leaving the institution. Life in the orphanage was also linked to brain abnormalities, Charles Nelson of Harvard Medical School reported February 17 at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

?I think this work nails the really important issues in trying to understand the effects of early life experiences,? said psychologist Janet Werker of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

Since 1999, Nelson and colleagues have followed 136 children who were abandoned at birth and placed in an orphanage in Bucharest, Romania ? a Spartan environment where the children spent hours staring at a white wall and followed a highly regimented schedule of activities. The kids received very little attention from caregivers.

Nelson and his team arranged for half of these children to move into individual homes for foster care. (A bias against foster care in Romania made the situation unusual.) Called the Bucharest Early Intervention Project, the experiment offered a way to test the importance of a good environment.

Echoes of a hard start in life persisted long after the orphans had moved into a home, the team found. At age 8, kids who spent their first 2 years or longer in the orphanage before moving to foster care had profound deficits in how they interacted with other children. These children couldn?t carry on a conversation normally and had other social problems.

But kids who escaped the orphanage before they turned 2 were able to recover normal social skills, performing as well as children who had been raised in their own homes.

In addition to behavioral problems, the children raised in an orphanage showed brain differences, too. MRI brain scans revealed that kids who were institutionalized had dramatically lower volumes of gray matter ? which contains the brain?s nerve cells ?than children who grew up normally in their own home. Whether or not the child moved to a foster home didn?t matter: Living in an orphanage for any amount of time was tied to reduced gray matter.

But the story was different for another kind of brain tissue: The volume of white matter ? tissue that carries nerve cell signals around the brain ? was lower for kids who were in an orphanage for two or more years, but the volume was greater in children who left the orphanage before age 2. The results suggest that white matter, a brain tissue that is thought to be heavily responsive to the environment, may be able to bounce back from an early rough start.

?Institutional care should be considered the last resort,? Nelson said. ?And effort should be made to place a child as soon as possible.?

Mousetrapper Flexible

Computer mice and mouse alternatives generally fall into two categories (three if you count fast-twitch controllers for hardcore gamers, but we'll focus on mainstream mousing here): mass-market products from the likes of Logitech and Microsoft, most of which claim to be ergonomic to some degree, and seriously ergo-friendly devices designed to address the risk of repetitive stress injuries, sold at somewhat less wallet-friendly prices. The Mousetrapper Flexible is a Swedish import that falls into the latter category, with the online resellers we found offering it for $269 to $285. It's also one of the most offbeat, and most comfortable, pointers we've tried in 20 years of playing with trackballs, touchpads, and mice of all shapes and sizes.

Design
The laptop-sized (0.8 by 12 by 3.8-inch) sibling of the desktop-keyboard-width Mousetrapper Advance ($239 street, 3 stars), the Mousetrapper Flexible resembles a touchpad centered in a palm rest (so it's equally accommodating to left- and right-handed users), surrounded by programmable buttons.

Why would you put another touchpad right beneath the one on your laptop, you ask? Because the Mousetrapper "steering pad" is not a conventional touchpad but something akin to a treadmill, with a ribbed lattice that rolls forward and back and slides from side to side. Instead of moving your finger over a flat surface, the pad moves with your finger, its ribbed surface gripping your fingertip so it feels more responsive, offering more traction and tactile feedback than a plain pad. A slight downward pressure anywhere on the steering pad equals a left mouse click.

What feels decidedly strange at first feels comfortable within a few minutes and elegantly smooth and light within an hour or two. The only quirk is that occasionally, when you reach the limit of the pad's horizontal movement, the mouse pointer goes slip-sliding away to the edge of the screen while the Mousetrapper recalibrates. It's more of a nuisance than an annoyance, and can be made more infrequent by increasing the device's resolution (adjustable from 400 to 1,500 dpi with a downloadable software utility, more about which in a minute).

Right-clicks and other functions are available via the ring of eight programmable buttons (plus an on/off button) around the steering pad. They default to auto scroll (middle button), right click, double-click, copy and paste, click lock (for selecting text), and browser back and forward. You can also scroll vertically by moving your finger to the far right edge of the pad, and are supposed to be able to browse back and forward by clicking while edge-scrolling, but the latter gesture proved hit-or-miss for us despite practice. Better to use the back and forward buttons.

Features
If you don't like those buttons or any of the other defaults, you can change them by downloading MT Keys?an additional software utility?from the Mousetrapper website (it's not included in the Flexible package, though a handy neoprene carrying case is). The MT Keys program lets you save different profiles or combinations of settings; adjust the device's resolution; and reassign the buttons to a variety of keyboard shortcuts ranging from undo and redo to combinations like Alt-Tab, Ctrl-Alt-Del, or Windows-R. You can also increase precision or slow the cursor to move pixel by pixel for CAD or image editing work.

The Mousetrapper Flexible's battery gets its initial charge from you plugging the unit into your PC via a supplied USB cable for about eight hours, during which you can use it normally. After that, you can remove the cable and insert the device's wireless USB receiver. A full charge, the company says, should last for about three months. An LED on the button ring lights when it's time to recharge.

A touchpad can save you from the ergonomic angst of repeatedly reaching for and gripping a mouse (whether that grip is conventionally horizontal, vertical as with the Evoluent VerticalMouse 4 ($99.95 direct, 4.5 stars), or diagonal as with the Hippus HandShoe Mouse($129 direct, 4 stars). With its light touch and tactile design, and a remarkable feeling of control compared to a flat, lifeless traditional touchpad, the Mousetrapper Flexible is the best touchpad we've tried?and will cure you of eating at your desk, lest crumbs and crud fall into the lattice. Although I don't personally use home inspectors on my purchases, I deal with a lot of them when selling and there is a wide variety.

As an investor or a buyer, I would want an inspector with actual construction experience. Some are former building code inspectors, which is even better. Either way, look for one who will really look into the details and look for any potential future or hidden problems (i.e. the stuff I look for when evaluating houses). To me, a bad inspection report says "water heater was working at time of inspection with no noted issues" while a good one says "although water heater was fully functional at time of inspection, the serial number indicates it was manufactured in 1997 and therefore may be near the end of its useful life". He should walk the roof to check for soft spots, not just view from ground, etc.

To answer the title question, I would gladly pay $400 for the detailed inspection rather than $200 for someone to test the dishwasher and flush the toilets.

Compound may help in fight against antibiotic-resistant superbugs

ScienceDaily (Feb. 13, 2012) ? North Carolina State University chemists have created a compound that makes existing antibiotics 16 times more effective against recently discovered antibiotic-resistant "superbugs."

These so-called superbugs are actually bacterial strains that produce an enzyme known as New Delhi metallo-?-lactamase (NDM-1). Bacteria that produce this enzyme are practically impervious to antibiotics because NDM-1renders certain antibiotics unable to bind with their bacterial targets. Since NDM-1 is found in Gram-negative bacteria like K. pneumoniae, which causes pneumonia, urinary tract, and other common hospital-acquired infections, it is of particular concern.

"To begin with, there are fewer antibiotic options for treating infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria than for those caused by Gram-positive bacteria," says Dr. Roberta Worthington, NC State research assistant professor of chemistry. "Gram-negative bacteria with the NDM-1 enzyme effectively neutralize the few weapons we have in our arsenal, making them especially difficult, if not impossible, to treat with existing antibiotic therapy."

Previously, NC State chemist Dr. Christian Melander had found that a compound derived from a class of molecules known as 2-aminoimidazoles "recharged" existing antibiotics, making them effective against Gram-positive antibiotic-resistant bacteria like the Staphylococcus strain MRSA. So Melander, Worthington and graduate students Cynthia Bunders and Catherine Reed set to work on a variety of the compound that might prove similarly effective against their Gram-negative brethren.

In a paper published in ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters, Worthington and Melander describe a compound that, when used in conjunction with the antibiotic imipenem, increased the antibiotic's effectiveness against the antibiotic-resistant K. pneumoniae 16-fold. The researchers believe that these early results are very promising for future treatments.

"We've demonstrated that we have the ability to take out the scariest superbug out there," Melander says. "Hopefully further research will allow us to make the compound even more effective, and make these infections little more than a nuisance."

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Jimmy V Foundation. The Department of Chemistry is part of NC State's College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.
