President Joyce Banda Hands Over Ki7 Million Equipment to Youth Groups in Karonga

Karonga ? President Dr. Joyce Banda on Tuesday handed over the Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YEDF) loan equipment amounting to MK17 million to youth groups in Karonga District.

The equipment includes Bakery, Carpentry, Tailoring and Popcorn machines, all loaned under the YEDF program to benefit the youth in the district.

Speaking at Baka Primary School Ground in Karonga North West Constituency, President Joyce Banda reiterated her agenda to eradicate poverty in the country through job creation.

She said her Government understands the importance of empowering the youth, adding that the ministries of Youth and Sports Development, and Labour are working tirelessly to create jobs for the youths in the country, a move the President described as one of the best ways for Malawi to move forward.

"I came in Karonga today for the youth empowerment program. I have been saying that there is no other way to empower the youths than job creation. This is through professional works and self-employment.

"My first agenda is the eradication of poverty, and my idea is for business people to have enough income," said the Malawi Leader.

"Malawians should have access to loans. They must have access to education and enough food at household level.

"In this way, people will be able to have good houses, clean water and the pregnant women shall stop dying on their way to hospital because they will have a nearby health facility," said Madam Joyce Banda amid ululation.

The President, however, expressed concern over the behaviuor by some opposition political leaders, who she said frustrate efforts to have some of the Malawian youth employed by partners.

Nevertheless, the country's First Citizen assured the nation that her government will work tirelessly to ensure that the country and the people of Malawi move forward.

Earlier, Minister of Sports and Youth Development Hon. Enock Chihana commended the country's President for her initiative to empower the youth. He said the equipment given to the youth in the district will help to create jobs and wealth among the youth.

"Madam President, it is of great pleasure that you saw that our youths are jobless and that they ought to be empowered. Your Excellency, the YEDF together with 'One Cow per Family' programmes are indeed helpful to people living in rural areas.

"The equipment you have given to the youths in Karonga will create more than 10 thousand jobs and more than 35 thousand jobs in future," said Chihana.

The Sports Minister then asked beneficiaries of the loan equipment to work hard in their areas and advised them to pay back the loan after making profits.

Some of the notable people present at the function were Paramount chief Kyungu Mwakabanga III, Senior Chief Karonga, Deputy Secretary General of People's Party Hon. Frank Mwanefumbo.

YEDF Program is being implemented through Malawi Rural Development Fund (MARDEF) and it (YEDF) targets youth groups that are active, poor women and men and out of school youths aged between 8 and 35.
